I read somewhere that the cars already meet California emission standards, but can't guarantee that to be a true statment.

Well, first the car has to have over 5k miles. Second it can't be a federal only vehicle, if it is it isn't allowe din Ca at all. The RX-8 isn't a federal only vehicle because it comes equiped with an emission system that satisfies Ca requirements. All you need to do is buy it and have it shipped. Then go to the DMV and they give you a temp permit to get it smogged. The DMV will also want to take a peek at it, up under the hood. You make an appointment with them. Other than that it's really simple. I bought a car from Fl and that's all I had to do.

Did you buy it off ebay? If so lemme know how the deal went down. I'm looking at doing something like that myself.

Used to be a $250 "environmental impact" fee, but after years of litigation the DMV dropped it. (It was grossly unfair, since it applied even to vehicles with all the required smog equipment.)

In Oregon it is $108 to register a new vehicle for four years and A $3-$5 plate fee depending on if they decided I need to have two plates or just one.

CBD - Arny re-instated the registration reduction. It's only about $250 for a new car. I think my renewal will be down below $200 this year.

My 19yr old aerostar reg fees are $65. It's pretty much fully depreciated. It's like $50. + this special tax and that special tax and $5.00 tax on value

New cars may have some hidden fees- but small. The old $400. enviromental impact fee for out of state cars was thrown out by the courts several years back. I got all my money plus interest back from the state.

State sales taxes are the biggie, but they are everywhere.

The only thing is if you are buying and registering it out of state to save money. That's where they can get you with big fees.

The state was also forced to refund that fee with interest. I got over $500 back from the fee I paid for the 'privelege' of moving my (50-state legal) Miata to CA.

What are the total registration fees for RX-8s in CA right now? About $800? There is still some tax based on the value of the vehicle in addition to the base fee for plates, right?
Yes, they tax the car's value "in lieu of property tax" or some such bs. Somehow, I'm paying property taxes as well. At least the registration goes down as the car ages. That keeps a lot of old derelict cars on the road -- exactly the opposite of what you'd want to encourage for pollution abatement. Ah well...
