How often do you lay...

the rubber down? and at what rpm's? I hardly do it, but i was wondering how much of abuse is it on the vehicle?

I don't fully lay the rubber down. But, I will occasionally blip the throttle and do a slight slide when turning onto another road. If you do it right, you will just slightly feel the back end come out without aggressively "peeling out" which makes you look stupid when on public roads.

It's got just enough torque to open a pickle jar...
Once, the car was hot, and i dropped the clutch at 7k and the clutch spun, but not the wheels...
Nice car, but not a peeler.

The only time I do it is in an open parking lot when its raining...I wish I could do it all the time it's so much fun.

There are a couple roads here with slick concrete where the rain wash goes, usually on those I'll end up squeeling a bit without trying.

Never. Those Potenza's are expensive, and I like my car too much to abuse it.

Occasionally.. also nice to get a chirp from the tires going from 1-2 and 2-3.. thats more satisfying than a little wheel hopping burn at a light

Gotta burn off those crapcore 040's somehow!

me too, and I don't really have a problem with wheel hop, DSC is completely disabled.

Other than autocross, I don't, I don't need to get any good driver certificates. :D

Besides, with the exception of a tire-heating burnout at the track it does nothing for you or the car. Do it within earshot of a cop around here and it will be good for 6 points on your license.

I take it you're refering to the Potenza RE040's? What's wrong with them?

jajajajaja funny how you guys talk about doing slides and all, truth is seems like the Rx8 its not made for that, u gonna end up with a bad tranny and a 4,000 bill on your name cause you "abused" your car, along with the void warranty and the headache of dealing with Mazdas a$$es.so dont keep trying unless there is ice on the road or reallywet lol lol,

I almost never do "burnouts", except when my friends complain about how I "never launch anymore". Then the DSC and TCS come off and I rev to 5 grand and lay a patch (two, actually).

On a similar note, on my way to work today, I was stuck behind this fool doing 10mph under the speed limit for 10 miles. As soon as I saw my opening coming up I dropped it into 2nd and rode it for a second at 6500 RPMs then pulled out, pounded on it and got the reaer end to step out. It was really fun.

Nah, I think Mazda trannys can take it. My 7s have taken immense amounts of beating from autoxing and dragging.

Funny how this car slides with so little application of the throttle and you post this. Do you even own one? Keep the revs up in 1st and hit the throttle while turning a corner and this car will easily slide out if you want it to. I'm not talking about drifting through a corner or abusing this car.

just watch what the guys on Top Gear did with it, and then tell me that it won't slide. It is just not necessary, especially on the street.

Keep it on the track for that stuff. Just ask the kid who busted a wheel by hitting a curb while trying to DRIFT.

Exactly. But as far as on the street, I disagree. I can turn a corner and put the back end out 3-5 ft and quickly bring it back. I don't need to ask the kid who busted his wheel on whether or not what I do is right or wrong. I don't drift into corners. There's a big difference between someone drifting on streets and someone applying the throttle and feeling the backend coming out just a touch after turning.

to really drift this car... it is very hard and requires constant pressure on the gas pedal.
was it car and driver or some magazine that took the rx8 to drift days and found it terribly hard to "drift" this car? I remember even the professional drifting instructror saying it was quite difficult and not a car he recommended because of the fact that you had to floor it constantly.

to get this car to slide and get the rear to swing out is easy, any car can do that, but to drift this car gahh too hard and flooring the car while sideways is too much of a risk. if it was on a 240sx or mr2 where you can just slightly press down the throttle halfway and get this car to go sideways around a corner i would gladly do it on the 8, but our car doesnt work that way.

They have been very poorly rated.

I don't have them, so I can't comment but I hear people bitching about them all the time.
