How to remove broken glass from door panel?

As some of you may know, some punks shot up my driver side door window. See here:

Anyway, the glass eventually shattered into the door panel and the glass repair guy couldn't get it out. There are no holes big enough to fit an attachment in there to suck out the broken glass from the bottom. Now it rattles when I close the door.

There are tiny holes under the panel where a shard or two will fall out if I pull back the rubber covering, but that would take 10 years to empty it out.

There was a black rubber lining behind the door panel that the glass guy was not able to remove because there is some glue or foam or clips holding it on after removing the screws.

So my question is, is there a way to remove the glass from inside the door?

I've had my window broken a few times and every time i get it fixed , they clean all the glass out. Personally I think thats part of the work. Maybe you might want place a call to the manager and ask them in regards to that.

They had warned me ahead of time that the newer cars are sometimes too difficult for them to do. He didn't want to remove the lining inside the door because it's either glued or clipped in and he was afraid to break something.

Does anyone know how to remove the black lining inside the door?

i forget how it looks like, it's been a while since i opened up the door.
most cars have that foam cover glued like that.

there's no magic to it. take a blade or knife and go at the edges. the goo(glue type foam) will still stick when you close it up.

do you have a pic, chris? i'd rather confirm it than to just tell you to go at it.

You paid your deductible, it's on the insurance company and shop to properly repair your car. If you went to a glass repair shop that isn't comfortable completing the repair - talk to your insurance company and go somewhere else. Leaving glass in the door like that is sloppy work.

Agreed. If they aren't comfortable with taking off a door panel because they might break something, to me that screams, "I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING". Saying that newer cars do this and that and makes them uncomfortable....I've never seen a car door panel that was so radical and different that it warranted no work to be attempted to it.

Like DOM said just take the panel off. After that take off the rubber lining, which is held on by a sticky adhesive, which WILL restick. When that lining comes off you will find areas underneath where you can stick in a vacuum hose and suck it out........ -_-.

I haven't done this on the 8, but thats generally how it goes on ALL cars. We have an autoglass shop in the family and I help out often. Unless the 8 is "special" that auto glass you took your car to probably half-assed the cleanup by forgetting to vacuum and it coming up with a story to not have them redo the work to clean the inside. Just my thoughts........

I just had my passenger side window smashed last week in Boston, and the glass guy got it completely cleaned out (at least nothing rattles). And believe me, I had glass shards everywhere. The inside plastic panel is attached with bolts, you can get them out and have complete access to the inside.

There is no vapor shield on the 8, there is no sticky adhesive anywhere. It's just a black plastic panel. Like this:



My money is on the glass guy being lazy.

This pic shows the inside lining that I'm talking about. I watched the guy unscrew this lining but it's stuck either by glue or something and he was afraid to rip it off.

I don't mind doing it myself. I just didn't know how to get that lining off without damaging anything.

Okey dokey... I'll just pull the lining out and see what happens.

You might even be able to remove the speaker and get in through there. If you have a small enough vacuum hose then that would be the first thing I try before taking the whole panel off.

My glass guy found it easier to remove the whole panel than the speaker.

According to my glass guy, VWs and Audis have been doing this for years. So if your glass guy was afraid of pulling the panel out, then he must not have been very experienced.

yea, i've opened up beamers and nissans. never had to actually open up the 8 (only up to the point to swap windows), but it's all the same.

They're coming out tomorrow to take care of it. I'll just tell them to removed the black inner lining and get that glass out of there. Otherwise, I'll have to find some thin heater-hose and some duct tape and fix up my shop vac.

Its a shame that there are such half assed people out there. The most difficult doors to remove glass from are Ford vans and trucks, newer models. When that is the case, I use the vacume and air gun.
