How is the resale value on an Rx-8?

I'm in the market for an Rx-8 used, but before I make the purchase I'm interested to know the resale value of the cars.

I know getting Used is better than getting new, so that will help some, but its still a sports car. And with the rotarty engine, is that questionable to some?

I love the sounds of it, I love how it drives, but do some people not trust rotary?
I'm just looking to get a general idea of the depreciation value of the car too.

I'm looking at used 04's for around $21-$22k. I figure I'll have it about a year, and put on close to 20,000 miles.

Any info on the subjecet I'd appreciate it.

I got mine for about 19k with 26k miles on it. It is 04 Auto with Touring package. I have seen manual ones go for higher price though.

you might be lucky, the resale value is basically Sh#$ on the RX8 i payed 46 for mines, with all the options and i still owe about 30 (had it for a year) and the most ill get for mines with 9500 miles is 25 if im lucky.
but once you got rotary you never go back...... so im not planning on sellin it.

The resale ont he RX8's holds up well. It was one of Kelley Blue Books top 10 for it's value. You have to remember that the best cars hold about 65% of their value on the 3rd year. The worst are down in the 30%'s and most are 45% to 55%. People feel like they paid more cause they shelled out 2.5k extra in taxes. Manuals do hold their value alot more. I've been pricing 2004 BMW's 325i's and 330i's for my friend. They seem to depreciate from 35k to low 20's real quick so it's not just an RX'8 thing.

RX8 GT Manual dealer list @ $30,000
(2004) RX8 KBB.com retail @ $27,100 (90%) (Ya, right. Although I see them on the lots for this!)
(2004) RX8 KBB.com private @ $24,000 (80%) (I see them sell all the time for this at the dealer)
(2004) RX8 KBB.com trade-in @ $21,000 (70%) (about right given the first 04's were made in 03 and are 3 years old now)

So there you have it, the RX8 hits right were it's supposed to for a high resale value of around 65%. YOu have to realize, there are a few other reasons to consider.

(2005) CarsDirect RX8 New GT @ $26,800 (after rebates).

So, you can't expect that 30k car you bought three years ago to be worth more when people can buy it new for 26.8k. The main reason people buy them used is that they can't qualify for a new one or can't qualify for the Mazda rebates because they can't finance through Mazda American Credit.

The next time someone tells you the RX8's don't hold their value jsut slap them and refer to KBB's quote that the RX8 is in the top ten of 2004.

Just wait a little bit and you'll be able to get a brand new one for thousands under invoice. This year is no different from last, there are tons of '05s sitting on lots and they're going to have to move them soon.

Then Mazda gave 5k in rebates because they couldn't sell them and made that prediction of resale useless. The same thing will happen this year and resale value of used RX-8s will be poor.

Thanks for all the replies. I called one dealership looking for a used 04 and they said they were taking 7 grand off all 05's in stock.
Putting them right at $24,995. $25k isnt a bad deal on still a new car.

I can only see an 8 hitting 46k if a dealer equipped ever single overpriced Mazdaspeed accessory. And lube.

A used RX-8 is a lot of car for the money. The big issue is what is available in your area. Also, being a sports car the annual mileage ends up a little lower than for most cars.

What I have seen is 2004/2005 RX-8 MT GTs in top condition with only 10,000-15,000 miles go for $22-$23K. People are right in that new 2005s will probably be discounted to $28-$29K over the next few months. Still a $5K savings is a chunk of money.

Since one RX-8 weighs one and a half tons, you are so right.

A new 8 is a lot of car for the money.
A used one is all that much more car for the money.

Have fun....

The poor gas mileage of the RX-8, and uncertainty about the rotary engine by an ignorant world, hurt the value of the RX-8. Not just the resale value, but the value. If you buy a new one, and pay sticker, you're going to get hammered, but that's just Darwinian.

OTOH, if you buy used, for the right price, or buy new, having done your homework so you know how much they really go for, I suspect that it thereafter will hold its value quite well.

The real trick is to ignore the sticker, completely, and to be quite prepared to walk out of the showroom without buying; if the salesman detects that you're stuck on buying an RX-8, the price will reflect that. Even the invoice is only a starting place for discounts. Right now, dealers should be selling for well under invoice; later in the year, Mazda almost certainly will offer incentives, but I'm not sure that the final result to a careful buyer will be any different.
