I Am A Moron
So I decided to drive into NYC Friday night to hang out with some friends. I parked my car on 19th street between park and broadway. I left my apple powerbook G4 on the back seat under a sweatshirt. I didnt think anyone could see it and I was drunk so I really wasn thinking about the computer anyway (a friend was driving my car). Dont u know I come out to my car in the morning and the window of the back suicide door is smashed and my computer is gone. With all the bells and whistles on the laptop, it was around $3000. Im really depressed because im such an idiot. Anyway, how much do you guys think that window costs to replace? I heard that some insurances will pay to fix glass and they wont charge you the deductible. I am basically screwed on the computer loss because I dont have homeowners insurance and my car insurance said its not covered under comprehensive. F ME.

sux about your lappy and your wheels man. hope it didn't have any important/personal information on it
if all that your insurance will offer you is to just fix the window after the deductible is payed, look into how much a new replacement window will cost you. if it's less than the deductible, then that's a no brainer

Did you purchase the computer by credit card? Some of the more fancy CCs have built-in purchase insurance on them, though the extent and degree of coverage is a little less clear.

If you have renter's insurance, that may also cover it. The window is probably no biggie.
That's a pretty good part of town as well but NYC is what it is... I'm curious if it were completely under the sweatshirt or if anyone saw you cover it up. I see a lot of plastic bags/sweatshirts etc in cars in the city - a lot of them are not broken into.
I remember back in 1997, a friend of mine from FL came up with his old beat up prelude and girlfriend. Everything was locked in the trunk before we parked on 2nd St (near Ave A so yeah this was before alphabet city got all ritzy). Three hours on a Sunday afternoon - come back to see trunk lock picked. Friend and my gf missing nice jackets. His gf missing her passport and French immigration papers (unreplaceable!) How they knew there was sth there, we never figured it out. At the police station the officers - with a straight face- told us to check the sale on the 2nd Ave sidewalk that evening to see if any of our items were there

The window may be more expensive than you think because of its unique shape/size. I know a friend of mine had an old school Taurus that had that tiny triangular shaped window along with the standard rear windows. His got busted out and the cheapest replacement he could find was $280. Everyone told him that those smaller, unique sized windows are more expensive to replace because they simply dont make a lot of them. I hope for your sake the Mazda replacement is cheap. Sorry about the laptop..that sucks.

$300 for the window. That is the cheapest im gonna get around here. The window is $210 from mazda. The guy is gonna charge me $55 for labor and then the rest is for other parts like the sealant and something else. First the guy told me $550. But then the other guy that worked there told him to see if he could better for me b/c I had just told him the story and he told the guy I was down on my luck. So he called mazda and they are ordering a window. I guess the $550 price was because he was gonna get the window from some other place, not a mazda dealerhsip---- Macs rule. I was in love with that powerbook. Now Im using my Sony Vaio and this thing is like a dinosaur compared to powerbook.

Probably a 12" PowerBook. Those things are pretty small. They also just plain rock!
Hopefully you had FileVault on. That'd stop anyone from getting your data. Hope you find a good deal on a new PowerBook and glad to hear you got a fair price on the window.

Also, check around with some salvage places. There may be a wrecked 8 out there somewhere that has it's rear windows still intact, and I am sure that you could get away with one for less than $300.
