Talking I broke 23 mpg!

Couldn't believe it, 23.07 mpg. Took a trip from Greensboro to the Asheville area up the mountain and got 290 miles out of a tank! The light wasn't even on when I filled up. That's the best yet for me, and usually running it at 75+ mph.

Yea, I just got mine today and I can tell already that the break-in period is not going to be fun. I drove 20 miles and I can already see space between the needle and the F.

I drove from Fort Worth to Branson and got over 24 MPG.

Usually average 22-23MPG to and from work.

Car now has 8000 miles to its credit without a problem. No re-flash since I bought it, no flooding, great car and the best colour.

Don't drive it like a *****, but certainly don't try to be the fastest guy on the road either.

After brake-in period my mpg have improved. New 23.5mpg was best I could get. I have 11k on her now and with 87oct cruz set at 65mph I have 3 times got 27.5mpg. Thats all hwy and very hard to do for 360+ miles. This is a real discipline test since it is so much fun to rev it up! Back in 89 I had a RX7 Turbo II and in those 55mph speed limit days I did 55mph for 150 miles and got 29mpg! I feel I could beet this if I had the patience and a road I could do 55mph on without getting run over. I know this is a sports car and my 12th ROTARY but the best I could get on my first rotary in '71 was 21mpg and it had half the power. What a big improvement!!!

I have around 7.5K on the car right now.

Expo1 - my folks live about an hour from the Dragon, arguably the best stretch of road in the country. Kinda wish I still lived up there - the terrain here is a little hilly, but nothing like Western NC!

how would one get to the Dragon from Sylva? We have a friend we visit down there every year, and he didn't know what I was talking about last September when we went down and I wanted to drive it..

Yes, I do agree that the terrain around there is great :D, I just never seem to have the free time to be able to do the Dragon, but it is on my list of things to do.

I wonder if the differences we're seeing in gas mileage has to do with how the car was broken in? People with 23+, can you describe your breakin timeframe- how long did you take?

I feel the breakin time of the car is very important! I followed the manual. I use 87oct most of the time, but when I want a little extra performance I use 91oct. I also change the oil(dino) every 2-3k. I have used syn oil in past Rotarys, but I never have changed it so often. I got my Son hooked on Mazdas too, poor kid wants the 8 so bad!!!

My last tank gave me 23.2 mpg in mixed driving (some around-town driving, some 75 mph freeway cruising, and several zips over 7000 rpm). I have about 1,600 miles on the car. Since I bought the car, the mileage has improved from just under 20 to just over 23, so I can't complain. I broke it in by the book, by the way.

I have been hitting 17-18 consistently and after my M flash it looks like I will hit 20-22 mpg. I am even happier than before.

Again thesetypes of posts mean nothing to me. Ofcourse you guys will get great mileage on 100% highwaymiles.

Whensomeone manages to break 19 mpg w/100%city miles THEN I will be impressed.

Bytheway how many gallons do you usuallyput into the tank when you go back for a fillup? Yousay you got 290miles out of your tank right? On my tank I almost always fill up whenits significantly below E --the very last notch-- and that usually endsup being ~14.5 gallon fill ups. 290 miles would only be 20MPG in my case -- 290/14.5 = 20 MPG. I guessyou must have only filled up a little over 12 gallons to get that 23mpg --meaning you didnt drive allthe way downto the last notch b/c if you did then you really didnt get 23 mpg.

Jerky -
I'm a bit confused. If I fill my tank, drive, refill it, check the amount I refilled, and divide that into the number of miles driven, I'll REALLY get the number of miles per gallon REGARDLESS of how far down I allow the needle to go. Anyone disagree?

OK, the results are in, I got 275 miles / 13.1 gallons I put back in = 20.99 MPG. This was using 93 octan fuel with the dsc off 90% of the time. I am now putting 91 octane with the DSC on and will post my results ASAP.
