I could not help it!

Everyone,

I could not help it! I have 500 miles on my 2005 RX8 and I could not keep it under 4000 RPM. I know stupid!! Now I am going to practice the proper procedure in break-in process.

I am going to take it for a non-synthetic oil change this Saturday, I probably do not have to but I think it will make me feel better.

Besides saying that I am crazy, stupid, or just plain immature etc…

Can some of you enlighten me with your professional experience; this is my 1st rotary engine if you could not tell already.

Have I hurt this magnificent engine in any way, I know this is a tough one to answer.

Thank you,

P.S. Seems I get smoke when I 1st start the car it in the morning, this happens only in the morning.

It's fine, don't get too **** about break in procedures, many believe it's totally unneccessary, so a slipup here and there is perfectly fine. There's also no need to get an oil change.

Ditto on what Ike said, plus 500mi is close enough... and I doubt any of us stayed below 4k rpm. I personally tried to stay below 6k... but I still found 7k a few times in the first 500mi. 10k miles later and it's stronger than ever... :D

I thought the engines were also broke-in at Hiroshima before leaving for the US. So, you should be OK. What is really bad, is to not let the engine properly warm up before driving it - warm it up first!

Somebody said that they also break in each engine at the factory too.

Don't worry, be happy. You didn't harm it at all. And Nemesis is right, just warm it up a bit at cold starts and don't drive it hard when you start moving until the engine temp builds up to normal, which won't take long.

I'd agree with the warm up ... to refine the point ... the temperature gauge measures only the coolant's temp not the temp of the engine, so take it easy for a little while even after the coolant temp is up to allow the engine and its various types of metals to warm up too.

Change the oil on a regular basis, this is a key to Rotary longevity.

Welcome to the Cult!

You too!! :D Don't worry about it. I don't think there are many 8 owners that did'nt have a little fun when they first bought the car. The car is addictive!! Period.

You have to have great discipline; you can feel the excitement of the engine tempting you to up the revs!!!

Ahh but you have to take it easy, the anticipation of acceleration in the future is awesome!!!!

Top of the tank, take it for an extended spin, put a couple hundred miles on it, Repeat then you can start to test some of its high limits and gain an understanding of what a truely excellent machine the 8 is! Your connected to this car.

Quite normal upon startup: this is oil smoke which helps lube up the rotors.

Happens only when you start it up.

All I have to say is wait until you hear the "beep"! It's the nicest sound you've ever heard.

This car makes all my bad days at work go away...quickly!!

Enjoy! I brought it to 8K the 2nd day and it survived.

That was the biggest factor that made me look and look until I found a car like the 8 to replace my Fiero Formula. I've got some really sweet twisties between my job and home, and I've always used them to get my mind off stuff. It works the other way, too. Driving roads like that can focus you and help you work stuff out, too. Definately therapeutic.

Hard to stay under 5k isnt it?

I've had mine to 7k (only once) at about 500 miles. I'm at 650 now. Trying to be good until at least 1000 miles.

I'm almost at 1000 miles, and I don't think I've cracked 7k, yet. Done a bunch of full throttle pulls to 6k since 700 miles, though.

As soon as I hit 600 miles I redlined her. I couldn't handle it any longer. The first 500 I stayed under 5k, then started bringing it up to 6k and now I redline every trip at least once. I've always said theres no point in owning a sports car if you're gonna drive it like a buick.

Ok I confess I have heard the beep 3 times!! 3 times two many on this 674 miles car!

So now it is 4000 rpm till at least 1000 miles.

Thank you for answering the smoke question. Great to know!!

I hate to put the miles on the car, but it is so fun to drive, I can not wait to REV it higher again!!!!

I am also looking into getting a new fly wheel and a cold air intake, but I will wait at least 5000 miles.

P.S. I waved to another RX8 and they waved back. Oh did I mention there was an extremely beautiful female passenger Zoom Zoom Zoom!!
