I emailed Mazdaspeed
I sent an email to Mazdaspeed imploring them to bring out the elusive Mazdaspeed RX-8.
My email:
I received a reply two days later (I edited out his name just because I don't want to post people's names all over the internet):
So guys, please join me in telling Mazda what we want to see, and buy!
My email:
A long time fan of the rotary engine, I own a 2004 RX-8 and absolutely love it. I recently helped a friend of mine buy a 2008 Mazdaspeed3, and while its a great car, it seems strange to me that an economy hatchback was chosen to undergo the MAZDASPEED treatment.
Ideally, I would like to see a Mazdaspeed RX-8, using the Renesis engine with either a turbo or supercharger. This would allow it to compete much better against it's rivals. I can tell you if such a vehicle were produced I would buy it in a heartbeat. It would properly represent the essence of Mazdaspeed.

Hello Pieter,
Thank you for contacting Mazda.
As for your inquiry, I am a 2006 Mazda RX-8 owner and I love my car also. I have the Galaxy Gray Mica and I wash it all the time!
I encourage all Mazda RX-8 to continue to write us with this suggestion and one day we might get this vehicle into production.
Again, thank you for your suggestion. I will document this for our corporate records.

Flagships don't pay the bills. What is the flagship of Toyota? What is their position in the auto business? Instead of making a $40,000 RX-8 that still will also not sell Mazda should try making a stripped version of the 8 that is 500Lbs lighter & have a package simillar to the MS-R Miatas and sell it for under $25,000. Then offer 'use at your own risk' upgrade packages similar to Chysler's Mopar Stage 1,2 & 3 kits. If the N/A RX-8 had an easy to mod reputation people would buy the regular ones, mod them and Mazda would see all these modded RX-8's around and build a MSpeed version cause they thought they were missing out.

I would be willing to bet - as inept at the business end of the business as mazda has proved to be in past - that even they understood and made the appropriate plans for these type of sales when they were producing/selling 50,000/year worldwide. If I had to guess, I would say they have their bottom line squarly in sight. An 08 sheet metal update does make a lot of sense.

Expo1 makes the point well. While the RX-8 is what Mazda likes to show, it simply doesn't pay the bills. I'm not sure if the line is even entirely profitable to them - anyone know what their profit are for the RX-8?
Mazda loves the Rotary engine and but will need more R&D time to get it to the torque and fuel efficiency of a standard piston engine. So Maybe a Mazdaspeed RX-9 in the future?
The bottom line, the Mazda 3/6 keeps the company profitable. Be very happy that Mazda is not like most American car companies that would simply discontinue the line - especially with the sales numbers that the RX-8 brings in. Luckily the management of Mazda wants the Rotary to differentiate the company from everyone else. This means that the rotary engine and the RX line will likely not go away anytime soon.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the car and love the fact that it sells a mere 500-600 units a month since that makes the care a little more exclusive than the likes of an Evo or a Mustang.
Anyhow, my .02

I would say 300lbs off the sport model (2650 curb), give a solid, certified 250bhp (for arguments sake lets say that would be +25bhp), and toss on the Mazdaspeed suspension sways, shocks, springs - maybe up the spring rates another 15-20%. Offer that with some sort of warranty for 2 production years.

The way I look at it is, would YOU rather a girlfriend that slept with 10,000 guys a month, or 500? (And those are your only 2 options)
And to put it from the other perspective that mazda is a pimp, they trick out 10,000 toothless crack addicts for cheap, but put the blonde bombshell on their business cards, where as only 500 of their clients can afford it and are interested in more then just getting some....
So looks like business is business... your better off giving a few teeth to the girls that turn more tricks.
