car dealers are liars. they will rip you off blind if they think they can.
I could go ON and ON with all the BS I've been fed by both the sales people and the repair people.
two rip off attempts were at Mazda. i used to have a first gen rx7. the steering was loose - lots of free play in teh wheel. i took it to mazda. they told me i needed a new steering rack. cost was going to be well over $1000. I said no way. i found a private independnet mechanic. i called him up, explained the roblem, and over the phone he said there is no way your rack is bad, bring it to me. he put it on a lift, examined it, and ended up replacing some tie rods, and other front end suspension components - fixed the problem, for about $200.
second situation - my miata had a drivers side window that would not go up/down. i took it to mazda. so they had my car - once again, and looked at it. they tell me it's my window regulator - $300. i went online and found out that for my year miata, the drives window notoroiusly had a cable pop out of it's little bracket, blocking the window from rolling up all the way. i found an online writeup on how to fix it. i fixed it myself in about 30 min. no parts were broken. i found it hard to believe a mazda dealer was unaware of something that I found online that apparently was extremely common on that car...
two situations where a mzda dealer - IMHO - flat out lied to me to make up bogus service the car didn't need.
i trust the car dealers about as far as i can throw them.
sad thing is - when you start looking at other professions -0 like doctors, dentists, lawyers - tons of them are lying corrupt pieces of crap too. way too many people are more than willing to lie and cheat to make a buck.
