i hit bambi this morning
Driving down a 1 lane road into work, saw it dart from the left.. hit the breaks turned right at 40mph... hit him in the hind legs doing around 5 (not much it seems).
Pull into the lot, check the front, headlight area smoking a little...
I hear the rocks scuffle and the friggen dear is running at me... I stand there like um... wtf... about 10 feet before me he turns off a bit and is running towards the airport runaway. He tries to hop a 10 ft wire fence, well.. he bounches off of the middle of it, spins and goes head first onto the hood of an suv, bounces off and runs away. I started laughing.
So, now, my car is no where near the 9-9.5 psi it was running... it sounds like its leaking somewhere, like the BOV is letting air while its gaining. I'd imagine I have to check the hoses? Trying to come up with something quick because I was supposed to go to the track tomorrow.

Aw, man, I can tell you - an RX-8 is absolutely the wrong weapon for dueling deer. Even if you win, you lose:

Glad the damage was apparently minimal. Coulda been much worse.
One more tip - keep away from them even/especially after you clip one with your car. They can kick you half (or fully) to death when they're in a panic.

Head on - yeah, he might break through the windshield, but it's leaned back pretty far, he might ride the windshield up even so.
...one of those things I know too much about.

I came within what seemed like inches of hitting a buck driving home from Iowa on Interstate 88 in eastern IL weekend before last. Only I was going a bit faster than 5 mph. More like 80 mph faster - had the cruise set at 85 mph, crusing along enjoying myself when I saw the damn thing start up out of the ditch to my right, I instantly stabbed the brake pedal hard and jinked to the right onto the shoulder - boy you could feel all the stability and antilock stuff work, just missed hitting him with the left front corner (if I hadn't braked and steered, would have dead-centered him going 85 mph). He continued on across the road and I saw him get hit straight on by a Saturn going the other way - he flipped at least 10 feet in the air when he was hit.
Majestic animals, but stupid as hell. My near-hit situation was much like Cool Blue Dad's ... late afternoon/right at sundown. Thankfully, I had the sun working for me rather than against me and saw him the second he started up out of the ditch.

Airport in Jersey.
No, I'm probably going to take it back to where I got it put on so we can put it on the lift... it feels almost like running stock again, at 5k rpm (while still gaining rpms) it sounds like .. I dunno.. a sucking noise in the bay.
Bad timing too, as my midpipe is due to arrive any day, and my pulleys tomorrow... and I won't be able to go to the shop til later. But, its probably a pipe or fitting around the intercooler, and hopefully nothing serious.

I cringe everytime I drive home from work at night because half the trip is through forest preserves that are packed with deer. Its so bad that they're sitting there eating probably less than 7 feet away from me as I drive past. All it'd take is a really loud noise and they'd jump right into my car or the one around me. They oughta have open season on them longer and allow more catches per person.

I read somewhere that there are more deer in Virginia today than there were before the English landed. There's more open space and very few predators left. And the hell with us encroaching - they're moving closer to the cities now. The problem has gotten much worse in the past few years. I've had a half-dozen close encounters in just the past year (and one near miss). For those that know the area... I saw a dead deer on I-66 on my way to Rosenthal Arlington, well inside the Beltway. Thirty years ago we NEVER saw deer this close in.

Last weekend coming home from eastern Oregon my wife counted 30 live and 8 dead deer in the first 60 miles of mountain pass. Then we had 120 miles of snow with 30 mph winds. Followed by 60 miles of rain with 50 mph winds. I'll take the deer any day.

Hunters in the woods might drive them towards roads at certain times on certain days, thus being *part* of the problem as you say, but I don't believe for a second they learn.
Run instinctively and blindly away from anything that moves or makes noise? Yes.
Randomly wander around looking for food? Yes.
Avoid strange odors? Yes.
Learn? No.
YMMV.
