I don't really think he meant he was only using 87. Probably just wanted to know if you could every once in a while and what the difference was in performance.

Some cars you will notice a difference when using 91-93 over 87 and some you will barely notice it. For some people the difference isn't worth it and I don't hold that against them at all. Sometimes in our area while 87 is sitting down at 2.99 and premium might be up around 3.29 and I admittedly shudder when I see such a difference (though I usually get premium anyway).

My best advice is really make sure you know where you're going with your life. A $16,000 loan at 17 years old is a big responsibility.

Get an old Accord sedan so you have a car you can beat the **** out of and haul around your friends. Ur young, live it up with worry free vehicle...by worry free i mean one you could care less if it gets scratches/small dents, dirty, interior destroyed from uncaring/accident prone friends (we all have them). One you can take on long road trips that gets good gas mileage....stuff like that.

i say go for it. my parents bought me mine for my graduation. as for upgrades to your car, and i know you will want to install add ons. its gonna be kinda slow since your 17 and u might not have a stable job. ive had my car for about 8 months now and ive spent almost 8k on aftermarket parts. first things first though, save for intake/exhaust/midpipe it will make your ride sound 10x better

It's been quite a while since I've driven stick...driving this car will be a hugely learning-oriented experience.

When I do end up picking the 8 up, can I like ask the dealership people to drive it home for me :| ?
I really don't wanna stall out on the crazy roads of Glendale,CA, or knock the engine crazily on the freeway - better still, should I just go and find someone I can practice in again?

WOW. I admire your spirit, but you're not ready yet. Tell ya what... go buy a beater with a stick and come back in a year or so. That's how I learned stick, and I'm glad I did.

i don't think this is a machine you want to practice learning to drive a MT with. service runs & BMW prices and trust me... that clutch is a wear and tear item, you don't want to have to replace one of those as i've recently done. mucho denero... ya know.

i use nothing but texaco/chevron. 93 is about $3.18 here.

rx8 > mpg.

its that simple.

also, ask the dealership to teach you how to drive a stick. or have a friend drive it home for you.

i picked mine up with 3 year gap since driving manual, if u have a year of experience prior to driving this car on manual,you will be fine. finally.. i would hold ur parents on the deal, and go to college 1st without a car for a year, than decide. you don't want ur 8 in a bad neighborhood parked outside or lots of potholes o.O, plus when ur in college, it's all short trips mostly (bad for the 8 and will SLAUGHTER ur mpg) i suggest a beater honda or something for college, and swap out for something @ senior year as graduation present (probably u will have more funding?!?!)

oh and wats good is honda retain values very good especially if u keep the milage down ( and you will with all the city driving) (or the opposit with highway driving back home etc)

I drove mine home from the dealer, and it was basically the first time I had driven manual. It wasn't too bad, and the lack of low-end torque makes it so you can give it a lot of throttle to make up with not being experienced with the clutch. Took me months to get relatively smooth shifting though, I think that the relatively large differences in revs between gears can make it more difficult for a first-timer.

Also, I've been using 89 octane for a few months now, and haven't had any issues. Some people even run 87 without any trouble, and some have issues with anything less than 91 it seems.

str8up.. If you love the car then go for it.. Put 93 in her and deal with it.. Its well worth it, trust me. I dont even look at the price of gas anymore. But everytime I walk outside its like I just got a new car and I get excited all over again!

I'm sure you could swing a way to get the car home without messing it up. Then just practice and take it real easy. You'll learn, no sweat. Unless you're a moron (which I'm sure you ain't), you're not going to screw it up. And if you do, fix it. No big problem. Dude, so glad you see the beauty of the beast. You are so right about this car. You didn't come here complaining about hp and your questions about fuel are sensible. I use ultra 94 all the time and I do feel a difference with that.

So, get the 8 while you can. Let's face it, you won't be happy with anything else now that you've got the bug. Good luck dude and drive safe. No need to go nuts with redlining at first.

Wow. You know, I'm thankful for all the positive, helpful replies I've received - but am disgusted at the attitudes of some members. People come to forums for one (primary ) reason - they want to learn about what the rest of the forum is discussing.

The definition of forum hasn't changed since Athens back in 1000 BC - it's still "a medium (as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas" Tell me, how is this forum open if new members that are simply curious are told that their questions are "stupid"?

I have asked legitimate, pragmatic questions - would anyone not, if/when they were in the process of buying something as precious as an automobile?

Solution: Remember that old saying you learned in grade school? "Treat others how you would like to be treated?" If you don't like the questions I'm asking, why bother posting? Would you appreciate it if someone told you that your queries were "stupid"

Anyway, rant aside, I do know how to drive stick - it's just been a couple of months since I have! I can drive it home, it's just that I want to be somewhat cautious with as expensive an investment as a car is.

By the by, I'd like to thank Zerobio - his post was perhaps the most encouraging I have come across so far!

Do you have a family member that could drive the 8 home for you? I was nervous on the test drive and made my dad drive until we got out in the country when I took over. Do you have a friend who could teach you to drive stick before you go pick it up? Just a couple suggestions.

The guy has stated that his parents are buying him the car so if they are willing to pay for an 8, why get a beater?

you should go with high octane on any car no matter what the manual says... you will always receive longer lasting engine life and perhaps better MPG
