I love my 8 but ......
Ok I have to admit this. I love rotary tech and i feel in love with mazda cars a long time ago. I have a 06 shinka rx8 and i love it .... still i feel missing something .....
i think the thing that i am missing is that i love 93-95 rx-7 and i have to be honest that the reason that I have my rx8 is cause my obession of the rx-7.
I love my 8 but .... its just not a rx-7

I feel ya man - I'm the exact same way.
Have an 8, want a 7, wallet only flexible enough for the 8.
I'm probably going to keep the 8 as long as the repair costs are less than the car's value (fingers crossed for 200,000 miles), so I've been forced to accept the fact that I'm not going to be behind the wheel of another FC/FD for a very long time... if ever again!
I dunno how long you've had yours, or how close you follow the boards, but there is still a ray of hope for people like you and me. If that axial flow supercharger delivers as much performance as the hype says it will, our 8's will be a good set of coil-overs away from the 7's level of performance (+ 2 backseats and a decent trunk!).

I went through the same thing.. I wanted a 7. (3rd Gen.).. Tried looking for a decent one in my area and couldn't find one.. So I just went with the RX-8. Not a bad decision.. Although I sometimes have doubts.. But then again, when I do, I just get in my 8 and drive around..

hmm I don't know... the FC and FD just feel crude in comparison. The suspension is not nearly as compliant as the 8, the steering is not as tight, the interior not nearly as quiet when closed up... Granted the FD is a little better than the FC... but not like the 8. Maybe if all I ever drove was race tracks... or glass smooth freeways (as rare as that is)... then maybe a FD, but driving on the real world streets, nah the 8 wins hands down.
The FC and FD RX-7 is just old school. I am even contemplating selling my 88 Turbo 10th Anny edition RX-7, just because it is not nearly as nice to drive as the 8 and it is just sitting around.

I agree with everyone that the RX-8 is a better "car." It feels like you're flying a jet & it's got a very accomodating interior.
However, hands down, no questions asked, the RX-7 FD is a much more exhilarating experience. The feel of the FD is nothing like that of the 8.
Best comparison via analogy I can give:
If the RX-8 was a human, it would be a gold medalist gymnist. Strong enough to do some pretty amazing things, but everything is done with a grace and a smoothness unparalleled by anything else. While not a contortionist, it's certainly flexable, and while not a track star, it's certainly got a definative "speed" to it.
Now, if the RX-7 was a human, it would be Bruce Lee. Power so beyond it's visible capabilities comes out of this freak of nature with a ferocity that has yet to meet it's equal more than a decade after it's prime. Smoothness and grace are not known to it, but not because it lacks the ability, but rather due to the fact that in order to routinely pull off mind-numbing feats of agility and balance that push the bounds of the laws of physics doesn't leave enough time to move with grace. Every movement drops jaws and puts a smile of amazement on those who experience the wonder first hand. Unfortunately, like Bruce Lee, the 7 will always keel over and die while you're still thirsting for more.
