i really hate posting about this

my car has been at the shop for a while to get some work done on it and on the day i was going to go pick it up i was told over the phone that they flooded the car..i asked them how many times? they replied "atleast 3" .they went on to say they have it running now but its shaking a little bit while driving around and that it should clear up by itself after driving it a bit.they said they would change the plugs if it doesnt clear up... what should i do when i go to pick it up later on today?! not pay them? make them change the plugs? get them to make a note on the receipt about the plugs before i pay them for the work they did on the car? i have NEVER flooded this car in the 5 years ive been driving it

I would make them to drive around with you and if teh car is not running right then have them replace the plugs. If you don't them get it in writing. A persons word does not mean **** anymore. How can you flood a car three times? You sure they weren't ******* on it?

I agree, take a test drive with the service mgr. If the car is not running properly when you pick it up, then the plugs need to be replaced ***before*** you leave. I have flooded my car three times. Never because it was not warmed up. I flooded after long highway drives. I now rev to 4k and turn it off with the rotors spinning. Never had a 'flooding' issue since.

At the very least make sure there is some documentation about what happened. So if you have a problem they can't give you a blank stare and say they have no idea what you're talking about.

OT - sort of - seems like a perfectly legitimate issue to post about, so I'm not sure why you "really hate posting about this"

Good luck with them!

Interesting information / tactic. I haven't flooded since I got my 8, but I have noticed it takes a bit longer to start after I have been on long highway drives, such as restarting at the pump during a refill. Maybe 1-2 seconds of cranking extra.

I will keep the tactic of shut-off during higher rpms in mind, see if it changes the behavior.

And to the OP, yeah, get everything in writing. Not just what they will do for you, but get it in writing that they flooded 3 times, and that it was shaking. They can fight you without it in writing, and while you still might win, it is easier to get it in writing up front. It is one reason I tape flood warning notes to the inside of my windshield a few inches above eye level of the driver and exterior driver's A pillar the few times I have dropped my car off for more than an hour or so.

I'd make them change the plugs while I watched. Then go for a test drive.

Have them do a compression check. It may not be a flood condition. Just a won't start. Twice I have had an engine replace due to problems when it had warmed up.

this wasnt at a mazda dealership. my warranty period is over anyway and i dont want to pay a premium to get anything done on it. no doubt i will be doing the test drive with them and get it in writing before i leave. i just hate having to deal with this but i suppose i should be used to it by now with a car like this. the reason why i said i really hate posting about this is because theres so many posts about flooded rx8's as it is and i didnt want to be in this growing list. where can i get a good extended warranty on this thing?

here's an idea-instead of paying someone x dollars each month for a warranty put that same amount in the bank each month

**** that. They flooded it (three times?!), so they should replace the plugs. Don't let them give you this "it'll fix itself after you leave our shop" horseshit.

ahh. now I understand. There's a big difference between a "duh, car won't start after I shut it off cold" and this thread, though.

anywho . . .

Just in case . . . you do know Mazda extended the engine warranty to 100k, right?

Also - when was the last time you changed the plugs? If it's been more than 15k just have them replace them anyway.

Just something to consider: flooding will likely shorten cat life significantly.

I do this, too. It works like a charm!

Great advice, too. I would go this route. Whatever you do, don't leave it at their word or leave at all before getting some sort of resolve. The second you accept your car, they will act like your conversation never occurred.

yea the papers i have here say rotary engine core has been extended to 8 yrs / 100,000 miles. what exactly is the core components?

i went out there and took a look and while the car drove ok it was shaking uncontrolably so i left it and told them to take care of it before i pick it up. they will likely clean out the plugs and not replace them unless i push for it. how often should they be replaced anyway? i was also told that they didnt flood the engine 3 times, they say they turned it off while it was still cold atleast 3 times and flooded it once which makes more sense.

Insist they change the plugs and make sure they put good plugs in, not crappy ones. Ask for a receipt verifying the plugs they used. Did you already get the recall done with the upgraded plugs? I think plugs are changed every 37,500 miles.

Recall 4206F, August 2006; just call Mazda (1-800-222-5500) with your VIN and make sure all your recalls have been done and when this one was done.
