The rx-8 is in a different class than the SRT-4. Rx-8 costs 5-10k more than the SRT-4 in the first place, and if we did want a faster car, I wouldve gotten an Evo or STi, but the car i wanted was about looks.

WOW, this thread is hopping. I can't believe how much energy is being devoted to this topic. (mine included

The Neon is the second quickest car produced by Chrysler after the Viper. Gotta give them credit for doing that.

But I find that the 8 has class where the Neon lacks (for that matter, all the souped up econoboxes out there lack class). Class has nothing to do with speed as the 8 is probably slowest of the bunch. But there's the intangible quality that others will try to ignore, but will always be there.

I enjoy the 8, but have you guys seen the new boxter? There's class for you.......let's see, the lease on the 8 is up in another year or so........

Guys,

Sorry to say but I raced a SRT4 the other night on the highway and it smoked me. I don't have any mods and I don't know if he did, but I just gave him a thumbs up for having a quicker car, but I'm really disappointed in the lack of power in the 8.
No torque, not much power and bad gas mileage. I really think as more cheaper, quicker cars come out, the RX8's stock will decrease more and more. Mazda need to wake up and give it more power. I don't care cool the car looks, when you're out on the road and the guy next to you beats you while badmouthing to his girl all the way that the RX8 is just looks, that's embarrising.

No streetracing stories next time.

You're making an assumption (and an assumption that is totally incorrect) that other people care whether they can beat an SRT4. Personally, I couldn't care less. There are lots of cars faster than the '8, but there are very few that look as good, handle as well, and are as much fun to drive. If all you care about is straight-line acceleration, then yes, you bought the wrong car. Doesn't mean the rest of us did.

I never mentioned that straight line performance was all I cared about and I know I didn't buy the wrong car. I love my 8. But, I'm not totally sold on its straight line performance. Sure it handles and looks better than most but let's talk whole package as most of you seem to bring up. Looks: it has, Handling: better than most, Price: more expensive than many others that have better performance but the 8 looks like a really expensive car compared to say a Mustang GT etc. MPG: the 8 sucks here. It's the 8s achilles heel. straight line performance: the 8 is ok, but not great here. Fun to drive: This is hard because for some big torque is fun and for others high revs. The 8 is fun in the high rev category.
Overall: the 8 is a very good car but has some drawbacks, the main one being the looks and the expected performance that one has for a car that looks the way it does. It looks like a race car so people expect it to perform like one. The RX8 was never meant to be a sleeper. The SRT4 was, look at the way it looks. It's a souped up econobox like many other cars. When a car that looks fast standing still has problems going as fast as an econobox then that hurts its image.
ONE QUESTION THAT I HAVE IS, DO WE ALL AGREE THAT THE 8 NEEDS A LITTLE MORE POWER? If that's its only gripe then that's great. Other cars need looks, handling, interior, etc. etc. So in that respect the 8 is still the better car. I just refuse to see the 8 as a perfect car, lacking in no area.

I don't agree at all. I think the '8 has plenty of power for what it is: a sports car. It's not a muscle car, nor is it a dragster. As a sports car, it has ample power.

I just refuse to see the 8 as a perfect car, lacking in no area.
No car is perfect, including the '8. Personally, I think Mazda has done a terrific job balancing the features and the price.

Wow, this thread is both refreshing and disappointing at the same time...

* If you get pissed off by people with SRT-4s and STis and Evos, etc and how they think their car is better than yours, you definitely bought your RX-8 for the wrong reasons.

Is it all about where your car is on the price vs quantitative performace curve?

I can only speak for myself but I eliminated cars like the SRTs and Evos because I wanted: 1. Performance, 2. Two Doors, 3. Stick Shift, 4. Not FWD 5. Practicality, and 6. Class. I also wanted a Nav system. When I looked at it all, not only was the 8 one of only a few cars that met the requirements, it was absolutely perfect. I was actually considering it against the 325/330ci and the CLK Coupe (I hate the way ragtops kill the lines of a car). When it came down to it, I was looking at a superior performer that was far less expensive but actually better-looking and more unique than the BMW or Benz (which are beyond common here in West L.A.) It was also a car I wanted since preproduction.

Those other car owners can talk all they want about "kills" but I don't care because my car does what I want it to do. If they're happy, that's fantastic. Apparently, they're the target market for their vehicle and they should therefore be thoroughly satisfied. I don't need to reconcile it all by pointing out the strong points of my car. The speed of their car isn't important to me and the refinement of my car probably isn't important to them. Obviously, if I wanted an SRT-4 I would have one.

The real reason a Ferrari owner doesn't care if he gets beat by a Mustang Cobra isn't because "It's just a stupid Ford." It's because the Ferrari owner bought the Ferrari for different reasons. It's also because the Ferrari owner is probably old enough to not be so immature that they care. If someone bought a Ferrari, they probably did so because it's fine art on 4 wheels.

Anyway, as far as this topic, I've been over it all ( https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=331 ) so I won't rehash.

* I think it's good to have someone like Ike on the board because he does keep it relatively objective. It's disappointing to see so many people stressing over other people's cars. It really is childish. Is this a competition? Do we need to keep up with the Joneses?

It would be really nice to be able to say that 8 owners don't care about whether or not it's the fastest car on the block but I end up seeing the same childish chatter here that I see on other forums. Fortunately, we at least have great moderators (like Elara) to keep this from being a street racing forum.

* Are you happy with your RX-8? If not, maybe you should trade it in and get something in your price range that makes you happier. Learn to love your car for what it is. No car is "the best" at EVERYTHING while being the cheapest. Hopefully your car is "the best" at what is important to YOU compared to the other cars in your price range.

Don't live your life by other people's priorities. That's how you wake up one day unhappy at 35 with a $200K job wishing you could have lived your life differently.

You went on a test drive, right? You loved it then, right? If you need a reminder, read through this thread again:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...7&page=1&pp=15

Hope that gets you back on track. If not, go out and wash her... then take her out somewhere and take it to the redline a few times. If that doesn't do it, may God have mercy on your soul.

Peace.

Want and NEED are two different things... put me in the want category (I think everyone is), but I am definitely not in the need category.

Why? If you don't get more power you may die? Is it hazardous to your health to not have more power? Please explain your need. If you can't explain it, I think you're in need of a mustang.

Couldn't have said it better myself. These people are in denial, and can't admit any of this. The truth is, if you were 100% confident with your RX8, you'd never mock another type of car or it's driver. You'd respect other people, their lifestyles, and their preferences, and see what these other great vehicles on market have to offer to different personalities. Seeing a thread like this only validates the insecurity of many RX8 owners. I also realize that it's living in wonderland to think that a site like this can be full of objective people who are confident enough in themselves and their car, to appreciate what other cars offer, speak objectively and realistically about the RX8, and ignore any individuals who feel the need to mock our car. It's obvious the SRT-4 has created a lot of stir, because of it's performance, and the more I see posts like this, the more I begin to appreciate this car myself. Look what it has done to you people. If you don't care about the car, then stop bashing it. If it was such a lame vehicle, why are you continuing? Come on people, wise up, be glad you own what you own, and be happy for those who chose something else.

Only problem I have with the SRT is how they marketed it towards young male drivers enticing them with the turbo charged street racer. And now there is a forum full of young males talking about street kills. Unfortunately soon they might be talking about real kills and they wonder why it cost a fortune to insure your teenage kids when they start driving. Irresponsible of Dodge. Do you think Dodge cares? I don't.

One thing I love about my RX-8: My happiness doesn't depend on anyone else.

I don't have to drive around looking for someone to race. I am happy the moment I slip behind the wheel.

I don't have to beat someone by half a car length in a dangerous street race to feel good about myself. I don't have to post a lot of BS about kills while ignoring all the times I got smoked.

God, grant me the serenity to drive the way I want, the courage to ignore the asshats, and the wisdom to know the differential.

Screw em, yes the srt-4 is fast but it is ugly as hell, build quality is terrible as it is a dodge and nothing will change that. It's a grocery getter with a big wing and a turbo. 95% of the people on that road see that thing and think it's just another tard ricing out their econobox, when in reality it's just another tard who bought a turbocharged econobox so they could stomp on the gas at stoplights to see how fast they can get up to the posted speed limit.
