Angry I think my key didn't get cut correctly

So i went to Ace hardware to get my super cool retractable key cut and everything seems to be fine. It looks like it matches my key and they did it for free!!

I go home to program it and that goes great!! The locks, truck, and panic button works beautifully! I sit down and watch the first quarter of the Pistons game and decide I want to go for a drive (Since the Pistons clinched home court advantage the game was not that appealing).

I hop in the car and turn the key....it doesn't turn over. I try 3 more times with the same result.

Pissed I walk in the house and grab my old key...works like a charm.

Anyone have any ideas or the same problem? I'm going back to Ace Hardware tommorrow and see if I can't get this fixed but I hope I don't have to buy a new blank.

sounds like the chip in the key might not be programmed to the car

How would I change the chip? Take it to the dealer and have them program it?

the vehicle's computer has to be programmed to recognized the coded chip in the key. take it to the dealer and they should be able to program it to the vehicle for you.

Arrow Diy....

Dealers charge like $70 to code a key....

....or you could just check our site's fine DIY section, under "Code your own key..."

The identical situation happened to me last year. I went to the hardware store to have my retractable key cut and they didn't charge me anything as well and I thought that was really strange (Perhaps they knew something already that I didn't). So I printed the DIY thread on coding your own key and I performed the instructions. Everything seemed to have worked as well as the remote. When I tried to open my door manually with the key, it wouldn't turn! I thought that was odd. I then tried to start my car with the new key and it wouldn't turn on half of the attempts. Eventually I could get the car to start with the new key, but then I had a really rough time getting the key out. It turned out that the steps on the key itself is so fine that an ordinary key cutter is not able to reproduce. I went to the dealer and they actually had to file it down with a wire wheel as a last resort. Luckily it works now. Goodluck to you. I was pretty upset at first that this expensive key couldn't operate smoothly, so I know how you feel.

But i did the whole 1st key in to on postion, until key lock goes off, wait 4secs then remove...repeat with 2nd...then repeat with 3rd...then the new key.

It still doesn't work.

I think you missed a step. I remember something about having the driver's side door open, because during the coding process you had to press the light switch a few times.

there are two things you have to program, the remote itself to unlock the doors, and the key. You can only program the key itself if you have two other keys that are already programmed, if not you have to go to the dealer, bend over and take it up the @$$ because for 2 mins of work (ok you cant even call it work) they charge like 70 bucks.

Hopefully you have to coded keys and then it will take 3 seconds in your garage.

Even with following the DIY thread, I had to do it two or three times before I was successful. Hope you can sort out the problem.

I hope so too but thanks for the encouragement

I'm going back to Ace Hardware after work and see if they can't "fix the cut" and I'll give it another shot tonight.

Talking It Works!!!!!!

So I went to Ace Hardware and had them touch the cut adn again they did it for free.
I go home and do the code set again and it worked!!

I don't know if they fixed it or if I'm just stupid (my mom says I'm what they call "special") but I don't care now that the key can start my car!

he is using a factory key with a chip in it.

If the key will turn in the tumbler then it was cut correctly.

the 2k5 key fob, is it like the vw/audi fobs? Where the receivers height has to be the width of the key?

I'm thinking of upgrading and I can't tell from all the pics I've seen. Can someone post a pic of the side of the fob?

great to hear you got the key fixed! since we're talking keys, i've never tested the panic button before. when u push it what's supposed to happen to let u know that it's working? i'm asking because i dropped my key recently, it broke, and the dealer fixed it for me. but, i've never really used the panic before so was wondering....
