Are you worried about just weight or getting rid of the sunroof completely? Just keep roof rigidity in mind though if you are really after handling performance. A few pounds off the roof means significant lower centre of gravity.

Good point.. he might be right, but 20 lb's right from center wouldn't do much considering some of the fat ***** that drive rx-8's.

Okay this is a....strange post to say the least.

Do you really track the car that much to be so concerned over a few pounds on your sunroof...furthermore, why didn't you buy a sports package?

 

next time i go to the track im gonna race naked commando style, my 3-4 pounds of clothing will surely make me #1.

Yes, I am concerned with weight. Why would I do this if i wasnt? my goal is 2800 curb. I think that is a very aggressive goal, but achivable with some serious work (seats, ppf, wheels, make the back seats removable by a latch, nix the carpet in the trunk, single outlet exhaust, tubular header (which I have), midpipe (have), I dont listen to the radio much except for traffic and news so maybe nix all but one speaker (that is a little harsh), cf or al trunk lid. That totals by my calcs to about 150 lbs. Definitely worth it.

I was going for a sports package and not a gt, but I got a huge deal on a car with EVERYTHING. If I ever resell it will boost my resale value. Besides, I wanted a sunroof.

Why does everyone question my intentions? This is my car, not yours. If I want to experiment and make a trackworthy car more trackable, what is the difference? I am not sure I understand the resistance to this idea.

I liked your original idea, that's why i read your thread, but it's been quickly turned into a stupid war of opinions. Thanks to all the people who have nothing better to do than diss anybody who wants to try something.

Let us know if you have new developments, I too would be interested in a cf sunroof.

 

Sad to say but its true. I also think its a cool idea. It would be usefull for someone who is into serious weight saving, not to mention its kind of a conversation piece for you and the track guys.

 

I think people scoff because it is a minor weight reduction. But all weight reductions on this car are minor (unless you have the GT package, and dump the heavy *** seats). Get 10 or 15 of them and you might shave ahundred pounds, without affecting amenities at all. Nothing to scoff at there... It's funny how many of the scoffers would be interested in a mod that adds 5 horsepower (eg an intake) though.

 

he got a good idea make the unroof CF, that thin is supper heavy, but thats is if you remove the motor too and make it manual open/close. i think he should just make a carbon fiber body like they did on the old RX7s. its just that some people take **** personal. not bodys fault....(BART)...lol Jkin. whatever carbonrx8, when you done you gonna post how good your times are and they gonna be kissin your *** thats all.
