I was just wondering if you really need to put oil every other time you go put gas if you just drive normally with the RX8 and if you really only get around 13 mpg that's if you drive normally not like a madman? Would you say getting an RX8 is high maintanence and what you need to do to keep your car alive for the next 8 years? I want an RX8 but i don't know if i should buy one especially since i don't want to buy another car later. What are problems you guys faced and if you stall on a manual would you break you RX8 since it seems to be really fragile?! HELP ME DECIDE?! should i just go for a camry?? HAHAHA HELP!

I get better gas mileage when I drive crazy on the open road than if I am going slow in traffic. If you don;t think you will be driving the RX8 a little crazy then why buy one?

+1.

The other night i was intentionally pushing it in town to lose some fuel because i wanted to premix that same night and I didn't see much fuel lost as much as I do just city driving.

You're gonna have to redline this car to maintain it on your own.

same here, i get better mileage driving fast than i do in slow movin traffic, but if you're worried about it being high maintenance i'd say don't get one. they're not any higher maintenance than any other car i've owne but it requires a bit more care and feeding. nothing too rediculous. drive it, and research is your friend.. not opinion, solid fact, learn about how the rotary works and stuff and why it does what it does, if you like it and can afford it and the maintenance get one if not hold off

I usually get 18-20mpg with a mix of fast cruising (60ish) and some city driving, with the occasional spirited run. I almost never take the highway and I get decent mileage, so if you drove it 65 all highway miles, probably near 20-25mpg. I don't put anywhere near as much oil in as some people on this forum say, I check it every few fill ups, and add some occasionally. It isn't really a high maintenance car. The night I bought the car, I kept thinking I just got my first car and it's gonna be a bitch to keep running, and it's going to be expensive, but so far the car has been perfect. The horror stories about hot, humid weather also scared me because I'm in Florida, but I've only topped the oil off once in the 5 months I've owned the car? With 1 oil change too.

It also depends greatly on city conditions and traffic. My commute to work is 4 miles in stop and go traffic, so my RX8 gets less than normal mileage in that sense. However, on the weekends, when it's highways and lots of driving without traffic, I get about the 18 miles per gallon.

What many people here have already said:
Don't get the RX8 to drive it conservatively. In all honesty by doing that you're missing the point of the driving an RX8. It should be driven "with joy" whenever possible. It's also better for the engine as well- to redline it and give it a good bit of hard work. And better for you too, it puts smiles on your face and elevates your heart rate.

I average 22mpg and add oil at about a little less than 1 quart per 1500 miles.

Puttin around town I would probably get about 16mpg. All Highway 21mpg @ 70-80mph. Mix Highway with traffic 20mpg. It's not that bad compared ot other cars. The car isn't that fragile, but it's not made to be abused. you have to slow down sometimes and not jump it over railroad tracks etc. It's no rally car. But not any different than like sports cars.

The engine is pretty reliable. But like any car, thing do break. Unfortunatley, w/ a rotary if a major component breaks your engine usually is done for seeing as how there's only a hanful of major parts to begin with.

You don't have to check your oil at every other fillup. I check mine every thousand miles or so, and that's easily often enough.

It's not fragile like some glued-together model car. I had about 1 hour of experience driving a stick before I drove off from the dealer, so if stalling would kill the thing, mine would've never made it past the first week.

Also, if gas mileage is a concern, just get another car.

Mazda recommends checking—not adding—oil every other fill-up—nobody adds oil that often. What's more, the 8 doesn't drink oil, it sips it. And that's by design, not because of some engine design and manufacturing flaw. (Apparently the engine injects oil to help lube the rotors or something.)

I average around 18 mpg, about 65%/35% highway/city. All highway brings me up to 21 or 22 mpg.

I drive all city to work and back, 9 miles each way. So I get about 15 mpg during the week, but I can get up to 20-22 if its all freeway. As for the oil, its not bad at all, I check it probably 1-2 times a month and have only topped it off once in the past year.

i get 260-300 miles per tank. I'm pretty sure it's a 15.9 gallon tank. which is 16-19 mpg. which isn't bad. I drive in the seattle rush hour daily. which really sucks in a 6 speed. i also use cruise control alot. but my mistress gets her fair share of redlines. the whole thing about the oil is over rated. i CHECK mine every 250ish miles. i bought it to drive it. i didnt buy it because its fast, i bought it because its fun to drive. and i can put people in the back seats without getting out of the front seat. HA HA. i will buy a new rx8 is it has some sort of FI. i work at a car dealership...i drive cars all the time. and the rx8 is still one of my favorite cars.
