They updated the PCM and did the TSB. All I can say now... WOW!
It used to crank a few times... or many times... then start up. Now, it's LIKE A JET. *crank* VROOM.
So, if you havent gotten the starter update... GET IT. You'll love your car, and you wont ever dread starting it up.
On a side note... HUGE difference in its driving performance. I think the best way I can explain it is... more smoothe and linear. I dont feel any hiccups as I accelerate anymore.

if u actaully HAVE hard starting probsa then save it for when u get ur recall notice. the recall has them replace the leadings if they havent been changed w/in the last year anyway. and if u complain bout a hard start...theyll do the starter and battery too.
just wait for the recall
just wait for the recall

You may not require the starter if.... you read the bullitin.
1. Is the VIN at or below JM1FE173*** ** 150745?
- NO – Starter replacement is not necessary, go to STEP 11 in REPAIR PROCEDURE “A”.
- YES – Go to STEP 2.
editting the post: I do believe if your VIN is is above JM1FE173*** ** 150745 you already have the newer starter. All that you need then is the plug change which is being done in the recall. Most 8's also have the plugs before delievery. My 2005 didn't have them so the service tech put them in when my sunvisor broke. I have a great tech, she drives a winning blue 8.

The service manager at the dealership which applied this TSB for me said, "well, I might need to order the parts because the RX-8s come with different starter motors for different model years, blah, blah, blah...." and at the same time I'm thinking, "No way, it was one rolling change, not 3 different starter motors for 2004, 2005 and 2006, plus there is no reason at all to stock the original starter motor. The dealership would only need to keep one part in stock - the new motor."
However, we were on the phone and I didn't want to take up a bunch of time arguing the point. So long as they provided the rental car until they were done I really couldn't complain about an extra day or two. Let's see - flatbed arrived at dealership about 4pm Thursday - car was ready for pickup the following Tuesday (a night where the service department was open until 7:30pm).

BTW, I raised so much caine because I didn't get the gas top off & the car wash that the svc. mgr. asked me to bring the car back in & they would do those two things. I also mentioned to him the three times (in 8 months) that my car did not start on the first crank & he said they would check to see if the starter/battery TSB had been done & would do it if not. Well, apparently, it was warranted, all they do is look at the s/n or something on the starter, which shows that it is an older one & hasn't been replaced or there is a specific range of ones that had problems or something. Anyway, now I have new leading plugs, new starter, new battery & my car was detailed & the tank filled up. And, I now know what the starter is supposed to sound like. She cranks up quickly, immediately. I didn't have what I would have called "problems" cranking her before, the crank is just SOOOOOO much smoother now.

I wish the RX8 was sold by another car company.

It's the "engine cranks but won't start" TSB, and not a recall. The updated starter and a stronger battery were provided in-warranty only if you cited this problem/need.
One of the online vendors here has a good deal on updated starters that you should investigate. I'm sure they'll check in when they see this rejuvenated thread.

Wow. I was just stressing about my 8 taking FOREVER to start to the point where I was worried if it was going to start. I'm gonna bring it in on Monday! How long does this change typically take them to do?

Also, can anyone help me locate the actual TSB to print out?
I went to http://www.finishlineperformance.com....php?pageid=11, searched for "crank" and "start". All I found were TSB for flooding and one for a CEL.
Am I on the correct page?

I had a cold weather hard start issue.
Got a new battery and starter motor courtesy of Mazda under warranty (per TSB) and the difference is night and day. It used to 'turn over' when starting, and now it instantly 'blips.'
It's hard to explain how much better it is now.
Anyways, is their a TSB on the plugs and coils, too? If so, should I press for those to be replaced?
TIA
