Make sure you break it in for the first 1,000 miles, and keep the rpm's low during that break-in period. get an oil change around that same time once you have broken it in.

I'm getting a new one too! I'm at around 36,000 miles. They put me in a Mazda 3 as a rental until they get my new one in - that thing is a POS!

How did the engine give up? Lost compression?

I thought the Renesis design meant the apex seals were not stressed as much.

I don't have details on the problem with mine yet. I've only had it for 6 months and this was the 8th or 9th time I've had it at the dealership. I think they may have just gotten tired of me! From what I can tell - some people have constant problems and others have never had a problem. Maybe you're a lucky one.

I had my engine replaced at 20k and mine is a manual. You would have to poll but I think the engine problem was mainly in the 04's but I could be wrong. I do know five or six guys locally that have had their engiens replaced as well so it's not that uncommon.

Just a minor point you will get a rebuilt engine, not a "new" one. They do not ship new engines from Japan for warranty work. Then yours most likely will be rebuilt and put in someone elses 8.

Yeah...that's what I figured. Right now, a rebuilt that runs is a plus with me.

Nah...I prefer having an AT right now.

I really love the car so the problems that I've had haven't really bothered me. As long as Mazda is willing to fix them, I'm happy.

Watch out when your warranty is out.

Oddly enough I have an 04 AT with 111k miles on the original engine. Starting and idling are getting a little weak, but I added premix to the tank and it helped that out some. Car runs pretty well otherwise.

I got an extended warranty from the dealership that I bought it from. 90,000 miles. After that - I'm getting rid of it.
