I'm going insane
OK, I just need to get this off my chest.
The lease on my VW Passat is up in April. I've known since November that I'm getting an RX8 for my next car, after two incredibly awesome test drives. I was planning on getting one of the new Mustangs, but was so sick of seeing everyone and their dog driving one, that on a whim I test drove the RX8. I was blown away. It was 1,000 X better than the Mustang. I fell in love with it immediately.
My problem?
I can't freaking stand waiting another four months! My Passat is a very nice car, fully loaded, five-speed manual with turbo. But now I hate driving it. All I can think about is driving an RX8, and remembering how sweet it was on the test drive. I read this forum like five times a day at work, I talk about RX8s to all my friends and co-workers so much they think I'm crazy and I think about driving one before bed. I'm constantly on the lookout for them on the road (they're pretty rare here in Eastern Iowa).
Argh.
Please tell me it will be as good as I've built it up to be when I finally get it!

Patience friend. Look at it this way. By April, the '06s will be here in "large" numbers and if you are persistent, you may be able pick up a leftover, new '05 for $6-$7K below MSRP--maybe more.

Your best off waiting till April after the winter thaw. Why drive it now with snow and ice? If you liked the test drive you'll love ownership. It just gets better and better as you drive and get to know the cars personality and character. I'm still amazed by this car after 2yrs having it. It's almost as much fun as a motorcycle and will out handle just about anything. Be patient, It's worth the wait. Although I'm no one to talk since I bought mine the day after I test drove it in January.

I have to confess, I did have the dealer run the numbers on getting out of my lease early. For an extra $75 a month for the life of the lease on the Mazda, I could have gotten out of it.
But my oh-so-sane-and-practical wife put her foot down and said now way, especially since living in Iowa I would have had to buy snow tires right away as well.
Damn women and their rationality!

Rational when it comes to US buying stuff for OURSELVES......but when it comes to buying a ring for their finger......the sky's the limit baby.

I decided I couldn't wait, and bought mine with 6 months of payments left on the loan of my last car. I ended up selling it, and basically got the money back I wold have "lost". And by the way, I bought on December 28th last year, right after we had a foot of snow. Life is too short to wait for the weather to get better. Finances might be aother story, though.

if it snows where you are i say wait. cause you gonna have the car but unless you spend 1200 on rims and snow tires you gonna be looking at the car sittin on your garage. belive me i know that feeling, i got my car on sept 22 2004, and it was parked all winter and when summer hit my tranny messed up so it was parked all summer ill say wait, get the discounts from the 05s and just have patience, in no time you gonna be one of us to the fullest.

Wait it out man..you'll get more for your $$ AND maybe talk the dealer in swapping out the OEM Bridgestones for Avon All-Season Tire..if not, buy those separately since you'll be easily saving $4-5G!!! Go in there and keep firm on the price you'll pay for it and you'll be waaaaay ahead of us folks who on a whim bought it after the drive :p *points to himself*

Holy **** what a funny *** story!! Why!! because it was the same thing I did !! I had an 04 Passat and had 2 year left on my lease and wanted out it was my second Passat and I wanted another sport car!! Here is some funny **** with VW.
OK If you take your lease to a VW dealer and turn it in early, they will take the car to auction...and say you owe 15k on it and they only get 10k..guess what they will bill you the 5 you owe and whatever penalties they want to put on you soooooooooooooo what do you do!! I know because I did this..
Get your ten day payoff..goto a ANY OTHER DEALERSHIP BESIDES VW...and you treat it like a normal trade in ...no penalties from VW Nothing! hell they even sent me back my 400.00 payment because I was 400 over the payoff.
So go get your 8 my man!!! if you have questions PM me or mail me whatever...Funny thing is how in the world does that situation promote customer loyalty!? I have had my 8 for a month now and love it...
2005 Sunlight Silver Greddy Exhaust black windows and everyone stares
Like I said you have questions let me know....

That is pretty weird, Papapump, especially since I was planning on getting a sunlight silver as well!
Tell me your Passat was black and I will really be freaked out.
Anyway, I appreciate your advice, but I believe I'm going to wait until spring anyway so I can put off buying snow tires for a few months.

I first 02 Passat was black , then traded for a graphite 04 that is the one I traded in. When I go my 8 we went to see my good friend at the dealer and we said we were not going to buy it yet..well a 15 min test drive and 2 hours later it was in my garage!!..so just treat you rPassat like a trade do not let the dealer try and tell you any diffrent. Just tell them , VW said I get no penalties just treat it as a trade in. I see VW is going to lose another customer to there bullshit rules and of course the 8 has nothing to do with it HAHAHA you will love the car!!!

Hang in there torbee. My Mazda fever hit real bad about Nov of 2004 when there was a used Winning Blue for sale at a local lot. I actually started taking a different route to avoid the temptation. I bought 10 months later.
Rather than driving a leased vehicle in good condition I was driving a 10-year old winter-beater Subaru year-round for two years while I saved for the new car. Prior to that I'd driven a rusted out F150 I'd bought for $900 for a couple of seasons. Prior to that a really ugly Toyota pickup for which I'd paid a mere $100. *That* was some tough waiting.
I suggest to amuse yourself with RX-8 related merchandise on e-bay and other websites while you wait and monitor the dealer inventories and cars.com, etc in addition to reading the forum here. In 4 months you'll be really well informed about the RX-8 and the local market for them. I shopped for a couple of months before I bought so I was really pleased with the deal I finally closed. As soon as I drove home in my new RX-8 none of the waiting mattered.

I may not be the best for advice considering on a whim I went in to test drive an 8. 3 hours later I had traded my SVT Cobra and was into a brand new RX-8. Wasn't the smartest move but when the fever hits, it hits hard. Hang in there.

It will be like going 6 months without sex and then having an orgy with the cheerleaders from the Dallas Cowboys.

Well in that case, I know exactly how that feels. Since that just happened to me
