I'm rethinking what I originally thought about exhausts...
WARNING: Long post with no "short version" available at the end.
(FYI my 8 is stock)
I have always found exhausts on any motor that wasn't a large block muscle car to create nothing more than a highly annoying, highly obnoxious sound. I could never wrap my head around the concept of what made aftermarket exhausts so desireable on imports. I mean, how over-the-top batshit retarded does one have to be to think that the ominous, ear-raping buzz of a modified exhaust is appealing in any way, shape, or form?
shut up
I'm getting to that
I also always thought the exhaust noises from the 13b were the most annoying of them all. I've been around and/or been driving, RX's since 1989, and while I always loved the sounds engine from *IN* the car, the exhaust sound you hear outside the car has never once appealed to me. I've heard many different exhausts on many different generations of RX-7s, and they all sound like rice burners, fart cans, or angry bees to me.
...Well, I think I might have had a change of heart as of 2 or 3 days ago...
I was pulling out of a McDonalds, and I was in a bit of a rush so as I was getting ready to pull back onto the road my driver's side window was still down and my music was muted. There was mild traffic and the guy coming down my lane was kinda close - not so close that pulling out would have been dangerous, but it certainly would have been rude and required him to hit his brakes a little.
Like I said, I was in a rush, so I said to hell with it and punched it. I don't like being a dick to my fellow drivers, so when I pulled out I made it a point to stay on the throttle so that the guy I just quazi-cut-off would (hopefully) realize that I didn't really mean to be an *** about my little manuver.
OK, now, real quick I want to freeze time in my story so I can give you a good mental image of where everything was.
At this particular moment in time I'm currently in the far right lane of a 3 lane road, the next car up in my lane is a good 200-300m away, and my front bumper is lined up with the rear bumper of a full size van in the middle lane, and the middle of a U-HAUL truck in the far left lane. I'm probably going about 25mph, and both of these big guys are going about 30-35.
Got it? Good. Time in.
My foot is down all the way and I'm just about to hit 6000rpms when I remember that I've got unsecured food and drink in the car that could possibly spill if I keep my foot to the floor all the way to 9000. I also notice the *slightest* hint of what sounds like a very aggressively tuned domestic reving up somewhere near that U-HAUL truck, but I dismiss it; more important ****'s currently at hand. I let off the pedal just a bit to make my acceleration a little less rapid (remember - there's still a truck coming up fast and angry from behind, so I'm still trying to get out of the way in a hurry).
Somewhere around 7000rpms my head lines up with the back body panel of the van in the middle lane, and right then, that Nascar-sounding roar I heard off in the distance instantly gets MUCH louder, and MUCH closer... in fact, it sounds like it's coming from the van!(?)
...wait a second....
I couldn't beleive it - the sexiest engine roar that I had heard on the everyday streets in a LONG time was coming from *my* car... a 13b, as well!
I was stupified by it. I forgot where I was, what I was doing, and just stared at the side of the fan as I drove by it, bouncing off the 9500rpm cutoff like a ******* retard. I wish someone was there to share it with me. It's so hard to describe it. It was such a pure, sustained, yet ferrocious, mechanical scream. It didn't sound like the artificially amplified and toned sounds you usually get from cars. There was no "grumble" or "throaty" sound to it at all - it was a melodic, uniform, climbing chord of notes. But it was MEAN, too! It was literally a *scream*, like the sound of a circular saw going through wood - the unmistakeable sound of raw, mechanized, terrifying power.
Someone, please, tell me there is an exhaust available for the RX-8 that harnesses that sound! I look (and feel) like such an ******* whenever I get up along side of a tall truck or SUV and downshift/gun it for no apparent reason.
I'm addicted to this sound!

There is a commuter train that goes down the street next to my work, so there is a nice 4-5 foot concrete wall a foot from the left lane on either side. I often find myself rolling the window down and hammering it there. The sound is sweet.

lol. Another trick is to drive along a road with concrete median island and roll down the window. As long as there is something to bounce the sound off of, you'll get a much louder sound. And of course, unplug the green VFAD plug.

one of the nicest exhaust video clips I've heard for the RX-8 is one I made a long time back with nothing on my car besides the Borla exhaust:

I think it sounds even better than what my car has now:

I have the racing beat exhaust, which you would probably like, nice and quiet for normal driving, but great when you step on it. I later added supercat which makes it a bit louder, but I still like it. I'm almost sure this isnt what you're looking for, but for a while now I've been looking at the HKS hi-power single outlet... sounds great I think: http://youtube.com/watch?v=EWbg2mLNi...elated&search= http://youtube.com/watch?v=MpcXzlmDg...elated&search=

Mazda did some tuning on the rx-8's exhaust so that it is not like the previous gen RX cars buzzing bee sound. The 8's exhaust is awesome! For a while I thought I liked the Z's exhaust, but this one's more F1-ish.

The 8's exhaust sounds great! I wasn't to sure how it sounded out side until i let my cousin do a drive by at 8000rpm. What a heavenly sound, its does sound F1'ish like someone mentioned.
Under a tunnel at WOT sounds insane!
