Impact of a lower Grade Gas
Ive had my 2004 8 for about a year now, and with gas prices skyrocketing, what is the impact of using the cheapest fuel available?
with gas skyrocketing, im not a rich person and have to drive about 45 miles both ways to work - its difficult to afford the premie gas.

What is the impact?
About 0.25 cents per gallon.
And if you are averaging 90 miles round trip that comes out to (assuming 18 mpg) about an extra $1.25 per day in gas.
$1.25
If you can't afford an extra $1.25 per day, then maybe the RX8 isn't the right car for you.
Course........you would already know this if you used that SEARCH button thingie........

Spend the extra 5 bucks at the pump to fill up your car. You bought a sports car, dont you want to get the best performance out of her?
Second I cant believe some of the misinformation people are spewing on this forum. My god get a clue.

This topic has been beaten to death. My observations in my 8, I seem to get better gas mileage on 89 than 93. I will put in 87 every now and then and I don't notice a decrease in performance, just slightly less fuel economy. But, still, about every 3rd or 4th tank, I will run 93. but then again, it is only like 5 bucks more to use the high grade.
I am in your shoes, driving 90 miles a day for my commute. gets pretty expensive, but thankfully I am moving much closer in about a month and buying a bicycle to get to work, use the 8 on the weekends and rainy days.

Use the money you saved to buy yourself a cookie, unless that savings got eaten up from even worse gas mileage. In that case, I will pm you an e-cookie since they are free.

you obviously know nothing about this car. don't ever speak in this forum again

Same here. It isn't a question of saving money, it is a question of whether or not I'm actually getting a benefit from higher octane. I have tried 87, 91 and 94 octane. Gas mileage seems slightly better with the lower octane, but not a huge difference. My engine has had MIAC from day 1, and this is not affected at all by fuel grade on my car. Frankly, I can't find any reason to use higher than 87, unless I'm on a race track, where I use the highest octane available since the engine is running hotter than in normal street use.

OK guys
Real quick about Octane ratings
Octane ratings measure gasoline's ability t resist engine knock, a rattling or pinging sound that result fro premature ignition of the compressed fuel air mixture in one or more cylinders.
The octane rating correlates to how much the gasoline can be compressed before it ignites spontaneously. When gasoline ignites this way, instead of by the spark of a spark plug, the engine begins knocking. This is not good because early ignition can cause engine damaged over time.
Because of this reason, higher octane does not mean perform better, better mileage, or go faster.
I put 87 and premium before. I did not hear any knocking sound.
But owner's manual recommends premium gas, so I always put premium.

To the rest :
I cant use 87 because I premix like 8oz, might have lowered the AKI a bit lower than 87 and the engine didnt like it, I mean it will work but its just not as smooth.
so I have to stick with 89 = mid grade. no problem.
I used to use nothing but premium, but when you think of it, its not the matter of "Cant you afford that extra buck or 2? sell ur car then", the problem is "what is the point of spending the extra money if your car works fine with it", call me cheap, maybe Im getting older I starting to learn that you have to save money bits by bits.
I might go back to 93 when it gets too hot. but for now, Im going for 89.
