Not sure exactly what they categorize it as (don't have my policy handy). I do know that when I took off my 91 RX7 convertible and added the RX8, my insurance went down (I think by about 200 / 6 months). Same deductables and level of coverage. I suspect the 4 doors and 4 seats make a difference. Given our discounts (multiple drivers, good drivers, multiple car, other policy, etc), I couldn't really tell you what rate you should expect. With 3 cars (1998 Durango, 2002 Prius, 2004 Rx-8), a camping trailer, 2 drivers (both over 40), 40 mile one way commute in the SF Bay Area, etc., my rate with Mercury just went up to about 1400 for 6 months.

Insurance companies consider it a 4-door coupe. Strange, huh? I think that would put you (in terms of dollars) between a Honda Accord and Nissan 350 Z. We're lucky.

My insurance classifies my 8 as "high performance" (I agree), and my 100/300, 500 collision/100 comprehensive deductible coverage comes to $377 for 6 months. I'm 25 in GA with no recent tickets and clean record. I was very surprised by that rate (Progressive).

No tickets in the last ten years. The insurance company did hit me with a performance car surcharge for the 8 though but it was something like $150 a year. Didn't really bug me.

Insurance for my girlfriend and I for the 2004 A/T RX-8 cost about 300 dollars less for six months than a 2004 Accord Coupe EX. We were pleasantly surprised. One of the main reasons why we were able to get the car actually...

Full coverage, with 3 tickets on my record and a fender bender.

0...I actually picked up a ticket a week before we bought ours, in my gf's 94 A/T Del Sol...speed trap. Waiting for the courtesy notice to show up so I can apply for traffic school to hide that point.

To quote Kathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes, "I'm older and got better insurance."

The variables that go into a quote are numerous and hard to predict. You just have to call your agent and find out.

I called (I'm currently trying to get my ducks in a row for this purchase) USAA to find out what the impact would be if I bought one (two drivers, one over 35, one over 40, no tickets, no claims) and was totally shocked to find out my rates would drop over then 1993 Caddy. When I asked why I was told: (1) Dual-stage front passenger air bags; (2) Side impact and side curtain air bags; (3) ABS; (4) Anti-theft system with engine disable. Oh, and even though I have a 100+ mile daily commute, the car won't be parked overnight in Travis County (second most expensive county in Texas for car insurance).

I'm with Allstate and I am paying $573/6 months

No tickets or accidents in 10 years... My insurance went up $46/6 months over what I was paying for my 2003 Acura RSX type S and that car jumped my insurance $100/6 months over what I was paying for my 2002 VW Passat W8.

Allstate classifies The RX as a 2-door coupe. So if it is a performance car issue then let us think: the W8 had 275 hp and the Acura was rated at 200 hp and now the RX has 197 so then if my HP is going down then my insurance should be going down not up you think!

I checked with Progressive and they were $200/6 months more than what I was paying with Allstate.

No Geico is way out of the question! Stupid lizard!

USAA classified it as a high-performance too (can't remember if 4-door coupe or what) but with a lot of safety/an-theft features and we're paying about $1,500 a year to insure both my husband and myself on the 8 AND our elderly 325. I'm 29, no tickets or accidents, and he's 28, no tickets or accidents.

It would have been closer to $1800 a year total, but I bumped our deductible to $500 from $250.

Take this for what it's worth... I called my insurance carrier to get a quote. I don't own one yet, but am in the process of searching. Anyway, I wanted to get a rough idea on rates and this is what they (usaa) gave me. By the way, I am 28, married, no tickets, no wrecks, no nothing. With $100,000/300,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 for property damage. $20,000/40,000 for um/uim. I would pay $470/6 months or roughly $78/month. Not bad for my age. And, they classify the RX-8 as a coupe. That rate is with it driven every day to work(10 mi). Just to compare it with another vehicle: I also own a '99 Suburban with the same rates and it costs $397/6 months. So, the 8 is just a tad higher. Nowhere near as expensive as I thought it would be. Ok, enough rambling, hope this helps a little. Happy rotoring:-)

My point exactly!

Why pay them my hard earnrd money knowing they are going to give me the boot later on down the road. And they know that will happen sooner or later with this type of car!

I had a friend that had his insurance (Gieco) cancelled due to an accident. An accident where he was a passenger in another car whose driver had Statefarm insurance. He injured his neck and Statefarm paid his medical bills. Gieco had absolutely no involvement in this incident. Upon renewal time Gieco cancelled his insurance stating the following: "The chances of you being involved in an accident is very great".

Yeah like him being injured in an accident as a passenger increases his chances of causing one in his own car!

WTF!

I traded my Acura RSX-Type S for an RX-8 auto (so wife can drive) and my payments actually went down almost $80 per month. Just about fell out on the floor. Having 4 doors makes a difference.

Talking

Does it get any better than this???? My insurance company (USAA) says I'll save $148/year by selling my 1997 BMW 328i and buying a new RX8!!!

Maybe Mazda will start a new add campaign.
