At 17 or even 20 for that matter insurance rates are sky high.
The RX8 has among the lowest rates of any car in it's class due to 4 doors, lower HP, DSC, and low accident rates among the drivers. They aren't stolen very often either.

~650 usd with 500 usd deductible. I'm 24 driving a 2006 with Geico in TX. I also shopped insurance rates before getting my RX-8. Most insurance companies will give online quotes. If I recall, the Civic SI was cheaper to insure, but I didn't really want that car anyway.

I'm 35 with a near perfect driving record, and I pay $1200 a year.
I do have $500,000 dollar policy limits, though.

I'll tell you right now that the Rx8 is gonna be cheaper than the Civic Si. My bro is 22 and he has a 2000 Civic EX and he is paying a higher insurance rate than I'am compared to my 2005 Rx8. A few reasons I can think of...1. They are stolen more often 2. People get in more accidents with them

The RX-8 will most likely cost less to insure than the Civic Si. Do yourself a favor and sit with your insurance agent and get the numbers directly from him/her. Insurance depends on a lot of factors - age, location, driving history, model, # of mi/yr..........

thanks guys.
another thing that might help is that im under my parants insurance.
hopfully it wont go up that much. currently i drive a 92 accord and im purchasing this car in like 2 weeks possibly. the reason being is that some old lady that was 83 cant drive! older folks like that need to stay off of the road!

I'm not sure that being under your parents' car insurance helps much. You see, since you don't have any insurance 'history' yourself, the insurance companies will lump you in with everyone else who comes to their company for the first time looking for car insurance that can't provide a driving or insurance history. Rates are generally higher for those people than for someone who has been driving for twenty years and hasn't had an accident.
It really makes no difference between 17-24 years of age, actually. Going to college/university, taking a driver's education course, even being married, all of that helps having a lower rate.
Nothing beats getting a lower rate than not having claims, or owning a car that rarely gets stolen (Aztek drivers, I'm looking at you...).

Time for me to renew my policy.
Main factor is going to be location. Two different states can vary by 200%.
My first term of insurance was around 2300 per year, and this year looks to be around 1800 per year. This is with zip code 91911, a lot different than zip code 97225 where I could get a lower rate with lower deductibles.
No accidents, licenced for 7 years. What I pay in 6 months could cover most people for a year or more. Not sure what is holding me back other than location.
Collision: $500 DED. $284.70
Comprehensive: $200 DED. $186.00
When I moved locations I had to pump my collision deductible up just to get a comparable rate. The limits aren't costing me much... there's only a couple dollars difference between the 300K/500K and 100K/300K limit range.
I'm perplexed, as I see younger drivers paying half of what I do. My only option is to hope for a continued rate decrease over time.

It is hard for me to say exactly how much I pay for the 8 since I also own two houses, an SUV, a motorcylcle, and the policies are tied together to get a big discount. I can assure you that the insurance on a Civic SI is stupid high. It is a very frequently stolen car and a lot of stupid kids have wrapped them around trees. So they view it as a big risk.

This is one of the reasons they jacked the symbol up to a 20. The used market dropped into an affordable range for young drivers increasing the percentage of ownership among a riskier age bracket. I guess they found out it is more expensive to fix than originally anticipated as well.
