The rx8 burns oil. Depending on how you drive the car depends on how much oil is burned. The rule of thumb is to check your oil every other time you get gas. First check your dipstick and see if the oil is low. If low remove the oil cap and add oil until there is enough oil in your engine. Remember not to overfill the oil. Where in NJ are you?

Also make sure you're prepared for relatively high fuel consumption: 16/22. Worse if you don't take care of your car well. But for most of us it's worth it. The handling and steering response is great. Torque, not so much, but it revs to 9k.

All you have to do is check the oil once in a while and add a bit when it gets low. People talk about the oil thing like it's some huge burden, but you only need to add like 1/2 to a full quart between oil changes, it's not a big deal.
All you have to do is unscrew the oil cap, stick a funnel in, and pour in some oil when it's low. Don't add too much, you don't have to keep if filled up to max, you just don't want it to get too low. Just keep a quart of oil, a funnel, and some paper towels in the car and you're good to go.
The fuel consumption is more of a legit concern, the 8 does gulp down the gas pretty fast.
You also need to rev the engine up frequently, but that's more fun than work. You also need to stay on top of maintenance, you can't let oil changes slide for 5k miles with this car. Tires need to be rotated frequently, plugs and coils need to be replaced about every 30k miles, etc. It's not a low-maintenance ride, you have to put some time and money into keeping it running.
It's worth it though.

Mine burns a quart every 3k miles. If you are an idiot , neglectful and forget to check the oil, an idiot light will light your dash to remind you that you are an idiot, and a quart low. (It has happened) Stop as soon as convenient and add the proper amount of oil as indicated on the dip stick.
