Issues with my 04 rx8.

its an 04 auto with 50xxx miles on it. The other day my fiance is about to get on the interstate, all the sudden it dies on her... takes a minute then starts back up and dies again.. she got to a parking lot and i went to meet up with her. For some reason it ran ok and got her home after that. Well its been running a little funny since then, it idles a little rougher and when reving it out at all (4k+) it starts making a rattling sound, almost like bolts in the motor or somthing. Today it got even worse, were driving and it starts making that noise really loud. we get to a light and at idle is even MORE rough and making the same noise!

Does anyone have any idea what the issue may be? I think im still under warranty (power train is 60k right?) I plan to get it in tomorrow or tuesday just want to see if anyone here has any idea incase the techs are idiots.

Bad coils, plus, wires => Coils seem to fail around 50K miles.
bad gas => it can happen...
bad motor => get a compression test if you can

The noise could be from a bad cat with loose honey comb making noise.

Bring it in to a good mechanic, not all dealers know how to work on rotories correctly.

Your in Flordia, take it to Pettit.

it sounds similar to a bad cat, but it sounds more up front under the hood.. Also, the odds of bad gas/coils or somthing AND the cat going bad within the same day are pretty slim.

Im guessing no CEL? The day I drove my 07 off the lot brand new, I got a CEL. Had that same noise too. They told me I had a faulty cat from factory and replaced it for me.

The rattling could be the valves in the intake manifold. Has it thrown a CEL yet? If it throws a P2069 then have them look into the intake manifold valves. I had a rattling sound as well with mine and the engine is being replaced along with the intake manifold next week.

Your 2004 should still be under warranty. Take it to a reputable dealer ASAP and get all the parts and updates done.

+1 for taking it to the dealer! Dont panic though, it might just be coils. That caused mine to stall

I took it in this morning and got a call a few hours later that it needs a new motor. Ill probably be down for a week or so . I didn't really ask details as to what the issue is, the guy on the phone sounded pretty clueless, Ill get more details when I pick it up.. The car has 50xxx miles on it so they normally don't give a rental car, so they say. Since its going to be a week without ill find out tomorrow from the Mazda rep if they will get us one (which I can assure you, they will!). What kind of luck are you guys having with replacement motors? should I expect somthing a little better off since its brand new (im sure some stuff has been changed since 04???)

Ouch. Very sorry to hear that. See if you can grab pictures of the spark plugs, coils (bottoms) etc.
Kind of sad when the dealer sounds clueless; Hard to be confident.
I hope it all turns out well.

Yes the warranty dose cover a rental too. What is the history on your car, maintenance done, plugs, filters, etc. Type of driving it got , short trips to work, lots of hwy, etc. Gas used, reg, prem. Anything you think of.

I just recently bought the car so I dont really know the real history. My history with the 2 months I own it are that its driven pretty easy for the most part but it does get reved out daily. Its my fiances car, she drives about 45 mins to work, half on the interstate and half on regular roads. I maintain all of my cars the best I can, therefore it gets oil changes a little before it will hit the 3k mark and I check it pretty much every weekend to keep it filled properly. I need to look in the manual and see if any other work is supposed to be done around the 50k mark so I can get on that.
I have not changed any plugs or anything, so far it has just been oil and oil filter which I used castrol 10-30 I believe ( any recomendations on oil? I was kind of stumped sitting at the parts store, I put synthetic in all of my other cars but read thats not good for this car)

I am surprised the last owner didn't have the recall compression test done. If he had you would'nt have this problem right now. The engine would have been replaced before you bought it. It's important to make sure the compression test was done before buying an earlier year model. Does not say much for car care by last owner. Lot of guys say 5-30 oil is the way to go. That's Mazdas international recommendation.

it's an automatic, the previous owner(s) of the car probably loafed the motor ALL THE TIME, which is BAD for this motor

good thing you're getting a new (reman'd) motor under warranty. Once you get it back break it in properly, and once broken in, DRIVE THE **** OUT OF IT!!!

and 10w-30 is ok on the motor, but 5w-20 or 5w-30 would probably be more preferable.

and no point to go synthetic if you change it under 3000 miles, and the car will never see track action.

I think its 5 years or 60k, you should still be in if your under 60k. I didnt think the cat would be coverd but I guess it is. Its ok, atleast I get the car back tomorrow instead of in a week.

the catalytic converter is covered for 8 years/100k miles per federal emissions mandate, IIRC.

Rejoice, for once my 04 is not in the vin range stated on these 2 most recent recalls. The 8 must have more recalls and tsb"s than any other mazda. It's all good though.
