I've been changed!
3 years ago I bought a Z28 Camaro. Loved the car, was wickedly fast. But alas, it kinda fell apart, maybe because I drove it too hard.
Well the time has come for me to get a new car, and I can't believe I'm thinking (very strongly) about buying an RX8! I never thought I'd ever get a Japanese car, but this car is really making me think twice. I'd prob keep it bone stock, just because thats how I am, don't buy cars to make them look nice, they should come looking nice. Anyway I'm new to the boards, and thought I'd sign up because it looks like I'll end up getting one soon. Hope I didn't step on anyones toes while writing this.:D

Welcome to the board. I was in your shoes, and still new compared to many members of the board... I still don't have my 8 but I'm ready and negotiating.
Of all the forums I have come across, this by far has the most information on the subject matter it pertains too (the rx8) IMO. It helped answer all my questions and get me even more excited to purchase my 8.
Best wishes,
Mike

WElcome, I was in your shoes just a couple of weeks ago. I also never did a single mod to a car but there is something addictive about this baby... just want to make it be more perfect... I think my other cars were so far from perfect there was no need to even try. ... I haven't even learned to work some of the things in the car but already I want more extra stuff!!!

8 years ago, I bought my first Mazda - a '93 MX-6 LS. I still drive it a lot. It's looking right at the 200,000 mile mark, won't be long now. It's getting new rubber tomorrow, a new CV joint, a warped rotor turned & front end alignment. It needs a new exhaust system sort of. I had to replace the water pump a few years ago. So, it's been very good to me. And I still to this day enjoy the way this 11 year old car drives. It's still tight with hardly any rattles or suspension noises. The interior still is looking very good and is aging very little. It will be my first 200k car, will it be my first 300k car?
I really just kind of thought about a new car to replace it. I really started by going to the Mazda website to check into the new Mazda 6 (Not what the MX-6 is, so I soon became not interested in it). It was then that I found out about the future RX-8. Wow! The rotary coming back with an award-winning new design, the looks, the doors & 4 seats, all that other stuff like carbon graphite driveshaft, 50/50 weight, ultra-low cg, traction/stability control with limited slip, uh, 6 speed, aluminum hood & rear doors, the total engineering effort in the chassis, suspension, drivetrain, electricals, electronics, air bag systems, the superior interior design, just everything about it is impressive, all wrapped-up in a small ports-type car. To me, it really is amazing. Then, the cherry on top was its truly affordable pricing. Sold. I was one of a whole bunch that bought one without even seeing one for real. When I finally got my hands on an RX-8 steering wheel, it totally did not disappoint. To the contrary, I underestimated what I was waiting for. When mine got to the dealership, I was there asap, same day, of course, to drive her home. Nine months later, I still feel the same way about it.
It truly is a great car. You will not be disappointed.

I was the same as you, I had a F-body (94 Firebird) and thought is was a great car. I got the RX-8 2 weeks ago (still breaking it in) but so far the quality difference is amazing ,the RX-8 rides a bit harder but responds much better. My biggest concern was low end torque but the RX-8 has more than enouph for normal driving.

Never had a good impression about Mazdas. Then wham...see the RX8, drive it and I love it. I mean I didn't even drive a 350Z, because the RX8 beat it in so many areas. And now that I have it, I love it, the handling, acceleration, looks, RX8 community! Just make sure you know what you are getting into, because there are a few things you need to be aware of. Do a search you'll know what I'm talking about.

I've been looking for the "right" car for a couple years now. My wife and I were in the market a year ago. I was driving a beat-up 1992 Accord with 200,000+ miles . She was driving a '99 Passat, which we both loved. So when it came time to dump the Accord, I couldn't make up my mind. I'm a bit impulsive with just about everything except cars. I'd go from being convinced I liked one car, then on to something else and on down the line. Finally, I gave up and bought my wife another Passat and took over the '99 for the year it had left on its lease. Then the RX-8 was announced and it was like a slap to the head. That was IT. I had to have one. So I waited out the rest of the year and took delivery on a Titanium MT, Grand Touring, two weeks ago.
The funny thing is that when it came down to those final couple weeks, I was STILL trying to talk myself out of the 8. A year of waiting, and I still couldn't get myself to completely pull the trigger. Then I was following one shortly thereafter and told myself, "There is no debate. THAT is the car. If you don't get it, you'll regret it for years."
And here I am, happy as a clam.

I definately love the 8 and am getting one (SOON! thought I've said that for a while now.... ) but I'm keeping my '02 Z28... The RX-8 is an amazing car but you just can't bust out in it like you can with 400rwhp... Call me greedy but I need the best of both worlds... amazing handling and raw power... :D

Welcome Rupes. You will find this board is invaluable in giving you the truth about the 8. Most of it good, some of it bad, but all great to know.
My 8 is the ninth Mazda I've owned. From 323's, 626's, an RX-7, and a pick up all the Mazdas have lasted longer than any of my buddies cars. My lastest Protege (don't laugh folks) has over 100K and it has never left me standing by the side of the road.
I was a preorder for my 8 and so I've had to have some retrofits done, but at least Mazda is standing behind their product and trying to make it all perfect.
Come over to the dark side, you'll never go back!

I had a 99' Z28 and thought I would miss the torque but don't at all. All I can say is that the RX-8 is a much more enjoyable car to drive everyday and there is no comparison in the handling department. Not to mention that after 8,000 miles I've had no problems. I had the Camaro in the shop a dozen times before I hit 5,000 miles.
