I ran 15.9s at the track 2-3 weeks ago in my 8... that was with 2nd and 3rd gear synchros grinding (couldn't even get it into 2nd up near redline on some runs) and a worn clutch. That's not great, but given the state of my car and the work that needs to be done, it's not HORRIBLE either.
I took it to HPDE1 this past weekend and it ran with the vettes, STi's etc, like a champ.
Oh, and I've got a guy on my Team with 350z, another one with a G35, and a third with an EVO VIII, and at every drift and drag event, each of them asks for my keys at least twice because my car feels lighter, more responsive, and is just more fun all around.
And it's got my son's car seat in the back... icing on the cake!

You guys crack me up. The 8 is awesome for a track (not drag strip) car. We hosted a track day for RX owners in June. I let a friend w/ a moddified STI in as well. I think he is around 375 at the wheels. He kept asking to drive my 8 and some other peoples 8's. I drove is STI and was not impressed on the track. He managed a 1:06 in the STI and a 1:08 in a stock 8!
The old saying rings true "it is what it is". Nothing more or less. I love the 8. I came from a modified FD. If you ask me to compare the 2 cars there is no comparision. The FD is a track animal soley designed for it. The 8 isn't. I handles awesome on the track. Stock vs. Stock just as good as an FD, but modified its a different game.
You can only get so much out of a 1.3 liter motor in N/A form. I am currently looking for another rx7 shell to put my 13B-RE into. I love speed. Fast to me is 10.99 or faster in a quarter mile. But a car that fast will not work on a road coarse because the different suspension requirements for them to hook up on the strip.
Again the 8 is better suited above 6K and on a track. Hey you can also take some friends to the track or some parts as well. You don't need a trailer. Those are all a plus to me.
Most of the folks on here crack me up because they expect the 8 to be fast and keep up w/ v8's, turbo cars, and straigh line cars. It wont and never will. Look into old N/A 13b's and you will be impressed. On a side note the 13b does extrememly well w/ turbo charging.
Anyways it is what it is.

Hi all,
Below is a link to an English TV program called top gear. They review sports cars an pretty much put them through their paces. They have a test driver called "The Stig" whose identity is a closely guarded secret who puts all the reviewed cars through their paces on their special track. On this show the BMW M3, 350Z and RX8 all came in with the exact same lap time!!
Here is the link that reviews the RX8 and shows its lap time at the end.

Now who said that this car is slow?

i personally think the rx8 has its ups and downs...the car handles AMAZINGGGG...but 1st gear on the 6speed is sooo depressing since the car is slacking the the torque department....my stock 240SX kicks out better numbers in torque then the 8. The rx-8 is definitely a track car though...you can take a little bit of power...a whole lot of car....and some of the best handling ive seen in a while....and throw it on the track...and do great. I personally dont ever want to own one again...the maintnence is too expensive..and the car doesnt quite make enough power for me....if it wasnt for the way the car was geared it would have never sold like it did. And considering the price...i can build a 450 WHP 240SX with an S13 front end conversion and a full orgin body kit...and still have money left over. You really have to be a rotary junkie to dig this car...and that i am not.

Anyone can take a $3000 car and make it faster than a $30,000 car. I have built several FD's would have ran circles around any car under $70000, but who cares. For under $15000 I could build a 500hp FC, but it isn't relevant. Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You sound like those kids posting videos about a honda civic beating a viper. Its all relative to what the car is built for.
The vehicle is a compromise w/ an unbelieveable chassis and suspension set up for what it costs. If you wanna see how good the chassis is just watch the speedsource guys. The porsches they run against are making more power and torque than the 20b's in the 8's, but the porsche's are having trouble w/ them again (refer back to the 80's and early 90's).
For any one reading this thread who wants to street race, Buy another vehicle this one is not for you.

Yeah, I knew it was a rotary when I bought it, but admittedly, didn't know a whole lot about what that really meant. Basically I'm saying I bought this car for a lot of different reasons others than it being a rotary.
As I have learned more, I have become more of a rotary enthusiast, obviously I still have tons and tons to learn, but my 8 was very appealing to me before I even began to learn a lot about rotaries.

I've never driven a 350Z, but I've driven a G35 several times. I know its a little bit quicker in a straight line, but I sure couldn't feel it. I mean, you can't feel anything when your driving that car, its a totally numb driving experience. The engine, tranny, etc. all feel very disconnected from the driver, I hated that and prefer the fell of the 8 over the G35 by leaps and bounds.
My friend, a VERY good RX mechanic, teases me a lot about how FDs he's worked on and his personal FC are faster. But at the end of everyone of those conversations, he always tells me how:
1. The 8 handles better than the FC+FD period
2. The 8 is VERY easy to work on
and most importantly
3. THE 8 IS NOT SLOW MY NO MEANS
My 8 is BB in BB. I've had a Ferrari F430 try to race me, a C6 Z06 race me (... now THOSE are fast), and a few other VERY quick cars come after me. I could care less about how fast a 350Z is, let alone an STi, EVO, or S2K. To me, it's all hype. It's advertisement (STi's, EVOs, 350s, S2Ks are always in mags). It's trend (STi's+EVOs have turbos, 350s have bolt-on FI systems that give you 400-500whp, S2Ks have parts galore to bolt-on). "The 8 is slower in 1/4, the 8 doesn't have as much hp, the 8 didn't come out with a turbo like the 7" are consistent complaints. Now doesn't that sentence look similar to the ones just before it?
I love my CAR. My car is an 8.

^ I'm not knocking other cars. I absolutely loved driving my friends S2K (has A LOT in common with the 8). The 350 has it's greatest potential in NA form. A 350-400whp NA 350 would be awesome. The EVOs are quick, but to be honest, the thing that amazes me about them is there steering response; dang near telepathic. The STi's are ... well ... fast. I've never driven one.
I love cars, but the 8 my chasis of choice.
