JDM - I just don't understand the obsession
That thread about the right hand drive car raises another question for me - what's with the obsession about Japanese Domestic Market/JDM parts/cars, etc.?
Why would we want such things? Yes, I know they give the JDM a higher-powered car, but I also know that those cars have an amazing number of other little oddities in them as well - right hand drive being among them.
What's the point of the obsession? Am I just too old and wouldn't understand? I am after all the "anti-mod" king.
Someone help me here ...

The term itself is way too overated. It mainly derived from the Honda guys but it also derived from terms such Jspec, Japan spec, etc. Reason why it got hyped up so bad with the honda guys is because overseas the the civic/ integra came with a more higher powered engine, d16 sohc VS B16 DOHC and having the entire front clip replaced with a "JDM" one made the swap much easier rather than getting new motor mounts, fabbing a new firewall dashboard etc not to mention cooler looking headlights taillights etc. Then somehow from 1998 till now the term eveolved into a style or for some a lifestyle. Then the term got so cut and mixed up no one knew what it meant. If you are new to the scene (import tuning) you probably have heard the term tossed around and asked yourself, wtf does that shyt mean. Whether we like it or not, that term is here to stay. Now tools like that one ***** in the "i want to make my car RHD thread" is another example of someone trying to make his car look like it came from japan. I don't flame him cause he wants to be different, there's nothing wrong with that, but i do give him shyt because the amount of work, time and money it will take to do something like this especially if you don't have the proper resources. A project like this is way too meticulous and wouldn't be worht the money.

I gotta think the OTHER JDM (Jamaican Domestic Market) has to have some interesting features:
- Built in multi-pipe bong in console
- engine cover doubles as a de-seeding tray
- Cupholders sized to fit bottles of Red Stripe
- Rasta-blanket patterned seats

no one's said it yet so i will, but It's JDM tyte y0! :p
heheh, i like a few of the JDM stuff like clear corners (i know it could also be euro spec, which does sound cooler than JDM) but its rediculous, and correct me if i'm wrong but, how do aftermarket parts that are from japan get labeled as JDM, cause they're not far as i know, aftermarket no matter what country is aftermarket.

One of my old acquaintance put it best when he said cars to some guys are like shoes and handbags for women. They overly fetishize the object to the point where they are never satisfied with it no matter how much they fuss with it, and become emotionally wrapped up in how others perceive them through that object to the point of irrationality.
What kind of idiots would waste money ricing up a 1992 Civic DX with rusty rear quarter panels? Yet you see these **** boxes on the road almost everyday. JDM tuning? For f-ck sake aim higher and go fantasize about a BMW 318 or something.

I dont get the JDM phaze either. As with everything else, once it catches on it cause the market to sky rocket & there for not worth it. Same thing with the Muscle Car scene. Its hard to find a good Chelleve, Mustang, Bel Air, etc because everyone wants one now.. bleh.. Ill stick to my 68' Ford F100, even though that body style is getting popular. ack!

Back in 1985 when I was selling cars - Audis and Porsches - the big thing was getting a "grey market" Porsche, Audi, BMW or Mercedes from Europe. But there was no such idiocy as the "EDM" or DDM (deutcheland domestic market) or any such ****.
I had two customers get European Delivery Audis - but all it was was a US Audi picked up in Ingolstadt at the factory - then they could motor about Germany for a week or two in their new ride, then ship it home. Big whoopie.
