NJ Just Another Stealership Story...

So, I've had my 2004 RX-8 for a little over a month now. Last week I went into my local dealership (Weisleder in Brick) and they were nice enough to print out the vehicle's History Report as well as any open recalls or SSP's.
They even explained the engine core warranty ext (SSP77) 96 / 100.

Yesterday, I stopped in to see if they would take care of an open SSP (MSP16). The issue I was having (rough idle when stopped) it may be normal, but if I'm reading the MSP correctly, it may have helped the problem. She made the appt and told me to bring it in today at 8:00am, which I did.

Today I when I went in she called the service manager who told me that this is just a warranty extension and other things need to be looked at before they would do the re-flash. Translation...we need to find something else wrong with your car so we could charge you! To me they should have re-flashed the PCM first to see if it resolved the problem, and then take it from there.

Anyway, I'm going to call another dealership in the area to see what they say.

MSP16 is not a TSB. It is a mandatory re-flash (recall) for your cars computer. This service is to be done free of charge, and you don't need to be having an issue. Call Mazda directly and let them know which dealership will not reflash your car under this recall.

P.S. Even if your warranty is expired they still have to do the reflash for free (Mazda pays for it).

no dont go to another dealer. dont let them off the hook.

the MSP16 calls for all cars to have it done- that happens to be why mazda makes it show in the dealers computer under the recall heading

NOTE:
• UNDER THE MAZDA SPECIAL PROGRAM (MSP16), ALL CURRENT DEALER INVENTORY AND
RETAILED VEHICLES FOUND TO BE WITHIN THE ABOVE VIN RANGE, AND PRODUCED
BETWEEN APR. 10, 2003 THROUGH NOV. 9, 2007, MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPAIRED
ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS SERVICE BULLETIN.
print it take it to them. they will probably say they cant go from your print out. ask them to print it themselves then if they still dont believe tell them to call the mazda tech line while you wait.

As the rest have said, it's mandatory. Slap them with the TSB paper, and if you get more fuss, MNAO time!

Just call them. They take forever to reply to emails.

You're right!

I just called them and they were very helpful. I reported the dealership and told them that I refuse to use them for service.

He then called the next closest dealership and setup an appt for me for tomorrow morning just to re-flash the PCM.

Thanks everybody!

They put a sticker on your car under the hood and on the rear drivers side door jam that says MSP-16 if the flash has been done. If you don't have the sticker, you're due for the flash. If you have an 08, you MIGHT already have the flash without the sticker, not sure when they started putting the flash on in the factory, but my 07 didn't have it.

it's the standard but not always the case. my car for instance has the update according to my VIN records but i have no stickers anywhere stating such. Not believing at first that the car was indeed flashed, i asked the dealership where i bought the car to run it anyway and sure enough, the software should the new flash in place.

'04 AT here.

I have had a rough idle problem for almost 2 years. Whenever I bring it in for an oil change, I complain and every time they find a "flash" that supposedly corrects it. It never does. The last time I complained they gave me the MSP16 in Sept/Oct and it didn't fix it. Warranty ended in December.

In January I discovered the TSB for faulty engine mounts, thanks to this awesome forum. I brought it in again, 2 weeks past warranty. Mazda took 2 weeks to get back to the dealership with the offer to pay for the mounts, while I have to pay for labor. Original quote was $800 for parts and labor, revised dealership quote was $160 for labor.

When I get back from this business trip I'm going to take it in. Will let everyone know if it fixes the issue (finally).

We'll, two thumbs up for Toms River Automall's service!

They took care of the Flash, and also replaced the spark plugs at no charge. They said it was part of the recall...who am I to argue.

I do need both motor mounts replaced though...

The motor mounts are as easy as changing the oil. Really simple stuff. Did mine a few weeks ago and it was no more than 30 minutes to complete.
