Just bought a '04 RX-8, no keyless entry remote.

I just bought a '04 RX-8 with 2200 miles from a used car dealer. However, the original owner's manual wasn't included and I only got 1 key.

I am under the impression, that "remote keyless entry" is standard on all RX-8's. So can I just buy a programmable remote off Ebay and program it myself?

Like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-2...spagenameZWDVW

How do I find out what VISTEON MODEL, FCC ID, and IC I need? I don't want to buy a remote and find out it's not compatible.

The one on Ebay is
VISTEON MODEL: 41848
FCC ID: KPU41805
IC: 4238A-12076

Also, what is the specific set of steps to program the remote once I buy one? (like open and close doors 3 times, put key in ignition, etc...)

Thanks.

I can confirm that keyless remote came with our RX-8.

I cannot answer any of your other questions. I would just hold my nose and pay the outrageous price at the dealer, but YMMV.

You are indeed correct
Do a SEARCH in our DIY for instructions how to program your remote when you get it.

or, if you wish, you can spend about $150 from vendors on this forum, and get the fancy '05 'switchblade' key/remote combo and program that. Dealer can cut your key for like $20

You can download the owners manual as a PDF from http://www.mazdausa.com. Just click on the OWNERS tab and register as a 2004 RX-8 owner. The owner's home page has a link to the manual PDF.

Should have gotten 2 master keys, each with a keyless entry transmitter, and 1 valet key.

These do come standard with a new 2004, but when you buy used, you get what you get.

Enjoy the 8.

Thanks for the link to the Owner's Manual d/l and all the help everyone. i will search next time before asking a question like this.

I bought the used '04 with Sport and Touring packages (and trunk-mounted spare tire) with only 2,200 miles on it for $20,000 (and the warranty wasn't started until Nov 04), so I wasn't too concerned that they didnt have the extra keys and owners manual.

Used RX-8s are great values! You don't want to ever buy one new unless you get a deep discount.

Have fun with your new toy.

I've never understood why used cars don't come with ALL of the keys. What are the previous owner's going to do with them? Drive all over town with the plipper and try to find their old car...?

Agreed, however a car sales person is not going to let a set of missing keys on the trade-in screw up his new car deal. People say they can't find the keys (too lazy) and the sales person says OK (doesn't care).

Same thing for the missing owner's manual. Hopefully the previous owner was a little more careful with the engine break in.

I have a 2004 and wanted the 2005 flip key so I went on Ebay and bought the remote. It finally came today. I also received my blank from Rosenthal Mazda. I went to the dealership and they made a copy of the key for free. I registered the key to my car first. After that, I reprogrammed the remote. Everything is working fine. Total cost was $90.00 for the 2005 flip key with remote.

Man, at least get a duplicate key (probably $40 or so) for that inevitable day you lose your key or lock it the car.

Has anyone tried buying the smart key blanks on e-Bay?
