yes. it's also easier to check oil w/o the cover.

To top it off, yes. The filler is under the middle of it. But you can check it without removing the cover.

hahaha. my car just flooded 2 days ago got it fixed in no time. but hay, this is the first time that my car has ever flooded in the past 3 years. yes i have 2004 rx8 (built in august). and i don't believe all the people saying that 04 has more bugs than any other versions. I haven't experienced any bug at all despite the fact that i autocross and track a lot. In addition to this, the most impressive thing is that my car DOES NOT RATTLE even after 25K KM.(yes i am from canada)

I have a 2006 and before i bought it drove an 04 with 24k on it. This is the reason i chose the 06 over the 04

1. The 04 had to turn over a lot before it started
2. The 04 was shaking like crazy at idle

my 06 starts fine so far and drive perfect...then again I only have 100 miles on it and have not taken it past 4 thousand rpm yet.

How long is the break in on this engine anyhow?

ps. thanks for the dipstick help!!!!

It's always the same engine! It never changed. The only thing that changed were flashes (programming for the onboard computer). Any RX-8, 2004 to 2007, that has the latest flash is equally resistant to flooding.

manual says 600 miles. I took it easy for 1000 miles. Racing Beat has their own break in procedure.

2004. :-)

Same engine, just tweaks to the accessories. They've updated the ECU programming a few times - there's a sticky thread describing those. And they put in a bigger starter and battery to give you more oomph spinning the engine in case of a flood.

Since you have a 2006, you've got the upgraded starter and battery. The latest flash (recall for all models through mid-2006) lets the engine spin a couple of times before starting to inject fuel.

Did you get the DVD and owner's manual with your car? "Deflood" procedure is in both of those. But, really, just let it warm up before shutting it down. Only takes five minutes of idle or less than two miles of driving. Then the only place you'd run into trouble would be with valet parking - but would you ever let a valet park your 8?

Guys I actually have 4 "problems" that i noticed but am not sure if the car just does that or if its really a problem??

1. When I make a left hand turn theres a loud clunk, alsmot as if i ran somthing over...this happend 3 times already and doesnt do it often at all but i am worried,

2. I cant get the car into 3rd gear. Until i push it thru hard and then it works perfectly fine. This has happend a few times too.

3. When i press the clutch it starts to sqeek a little.

4. I tried to start the car and it turned over a few times until it started.

Have had the Blue 8 since May - was scared to even try to drive it home and had it delivered
Now I know better - It drives like a good Mazda - no problems starting - no problems with flooding.

Stupid problems - hitting the alarm on the key when I pulled it out and not knowing I needed to simply restart the car ( and yes you can restart when its warm).

turning the car off and then sticking my arm through the open window - hates that - it makes the alarm go on..got to turn the car back on!

hitting the trunk button on the key and not checking it so the trunk light is left on and ran down the battery

running the battery down and not waiting long enough for the battery to recharge - there are so many lights and bells on the car that it really needs a fully charged battery or you get electrical germlins.

If you are in an area with mice or rats, place mothballs 1 or 2 behind the water and break fluid container otherwise they can mess up the firewall

If you have the racing skirt, watch for low curbs.

But this is going to be the car you love - each week it will feel better and if you drive it for a couple of months and then drive another car and come back to it you will never want let her go again!

I haven't heard any cluncks when i turn that might worry me. As for third gear I sometimes have a hard time getting into 5th but not third. And the clutch does the clutch petal squeak or the clutch itself. As for starting it usually turns over a couple of times before it starts but it's always done that. I know that some of the guys here have had their starts replaced. I have a 05 6MT and I love it I hope that you enjoy the car.

You also said you had a 06 speed6 and that it was faster. I've driven them both and I thought the 8 was quicker. And I thought that the 0-60 times were faster then the speed6. RX-8 5.8 and the speed 6.2 with about the same 1/4 mile times.

afaik, after you hold the revs at 3000 for several seconds, you are supposed to let the engine return to idle before shutting it off.

It the clutch pedal that makes a noise when i disengage it ( push it in). 3rd gear only did that a few times for me but i only have 100 miles on the car.

The speed 6 times are all false because it had powerloss issues. When its perfectly running, peolpe get 13.77 stock 1/4 mile and i would say about 5.4 0-60

Are you supposed to rev it up and hold every time you turn off the car, or is this only when the engine is cold?

This refers only to when the engine is cold and you wont drive enough to warm it up.

I have an 06 and have never had a problem with flooding it. At first I was very careful for fear I might flood it, but now I don't even get worried if I start it, immediately back it out of the garage to the driveway, and immediately shut it off. No problems there at all.

Mine has a little sqeek also but it's been like that since I bought it and hasn't caused any problems. Thanks for the info on the speed6. I agree with you th 8 handles much better. I'm waiting to put a turbo on mine.

Don't worry about flooding I haven't had a problem but I've done what Mazda says to and only time I rev the motor is if I drive for short distances and don't have time to let the car warm up. Where do you live.

I live in Chicago.
Im a little worried because I did not research on this car and it seems that there are major problems with them. I have an 06. I would think that the 06 should have had all the bugs form the 04 and 05 models fixed????

Where did you find major problems? There are no major problems with this car. There was a major recall that addressed an issue for people mostly in hot climates, and if there was any damage to the engine, Mazda replaced it.
