Question Just bought our RX-8!!! Best deals on Extended Protection Plans?

We just bought an RX-8!! A silver '09 Grand Touring, with the $5K factory incentive. I can't believe I bought this at Invoice+$300, minus $5K = $26,818 (plus sales tax of course . . .but still!!!) The Window Sticker on this car was $33,855.

I am guessing like all our other cars, I'll be buying an Extended Protection Plan. But I've also learned the best deals on these tend not to be from the local dealers, but usually from some dealership who writes a lot of these and charges just a little over cost. Anyone have a recommendation on where I could get a good deal on an extended service plan?

Thanks . . .Stu

I live in NJ - but I bought the ESP for my GM car from a dealer in North Dakota, and bought the EPP for my G35 from a dealer in Pennsylvania.

Isn't there some Mazda dealer (or dealers) who do a big internet business in warranties?

contact your insurance company -

i purchased one for my speed6 for a pretty decent price. It was a Mercury policy, and will take me through 100k miles. It's pretty simple - bring the car in, they check it out and call Mercury, Mercury sends out someone to inspect the car (usually in less than 24hrs), and they approve/deny the work. $100 out of pocket plus whatever services that aren't covered (alignment and such).

To answer "why" I would want an extended warranty let me say:

I usually buy cars, and keep them longer than the original warranty period. The car this RX-8 is replacing is a G35 Sport Coupe that I got in Jan 03, and would have kept until 2011 when the extended warranty ran out, had it not been totaled 2 weeks ago be some moron (see http://stu-segal.livejournal.com/17283.html ). I also have 2 other cars, an '05 Aveo and an '06 Vette, which are both out of warranty but covered by extended service plans.

I bought all 3 extended service plans from the manufacturers, not "third parties". The treatment from Infiniti and GM is identical on these plans - whenever anything goes wrong they seem to want to prove how fortunate you are to have the extended service plan, and bend over backwards to take care of you.

Except for oil changes, tires and brakes, I haven't spent ONE CENT on any other car maintenance in the last 6 years. These people have replaced things like, the position switches in the moonroof, the clock, the tweeter grilles, the driver seat upholstery, the radio, the memory module, the climate control module, etc, etc. And, surprisingly, when I told Infiniti the car was totaled, they cut me a check for the remaining term of the policy!

So the reason "why" is - this seems to give you bumper-to-bumper coverage and great treatment for a long time (only makes sense if you plan to keep the car).

SO AGAIN - Anyone know a Mazda dealer where I can get a good deal on an MEPP (Mazda Extended Protection Plan)?

Two questions.

In the last six years how much do you think the fees for these extended warranties cost?

What major items have been repaired that were not covered by the new car warranty?

I'm kind of curious about ESP's... how much would you normally pay for this? How much do you really save by doing it?

Not trying to be a dick, but some ppl read it that way.
Ok, thanks for the WHY answer.

Now I want to know the HOW MUCH total cost.

Very curious to what the total cost of the warranty is, Each one
Since I keep my cars a bit longer than OP does.
Am 61 so had many cars/trucks but wont be here on earth too much longer.
That said, my last truck, kept for 13 years, engine died and gave it away.
My last car, well I still have it as a DD, 95 MX-3

JUST Bought ( if I can say that) the 2006 8 in Sept of 07.
I have not replaced much except brakes, batteries, fuel filter, oil changes, etc on most of my cars

I never had all that trouble u seem to have. I dont anyone who has had that much stuff done in a lifetime, much less in 6 years.

You say> Except for oil changes, tires and brakes, I haven't spent ONE CENT on any other car maintenance in the last 6 years.

I ask>not even filters? oil, gas, etc? those free?

You say>>These people have replaced things like, the position switches in the moonroof, the clock, the tweeter grilles, the driver seat upholstery, the radio, the memory module, the climate control module, etc, etc.
I say>> Wow u must have gotten lemons. I have never, repeat NEVER had those problems and I am an old man, had many many cars
Does not hurt that I have a friend that owes a car service center.

Bottom line, its what u want. That I do not dispute
I want to know total cost for warranties. Can you please post that?
And yes, I do think the manufactures warranties are better than the third party ones as u say.
thanks

On average you lose by buying ESPs. That's why they put pressure on you to buy them - they're a great profit item. Not just on cars - also on appliances, electronics, etc. They provide protection in the sweet spot of the bathtub curve - after infant mortality (covered by the factory warranty) and before wear-out.

Some people do get their money's worth. Sounds like Stu did, although he seems to have had way more trouble than one would normally expect. I'm also curious about how much those warrantees cost.

Cost of Warranties

OK, the thing(s) is:
  1. I always seem to be able to find a dealer who will sell me a factory warranty for just a little over cost - I have never had to pay the outrageous list price they try to get from you when they are selling you a new car.
  2. You have to know when the "triggers" are that increase the cost of the warranty. For instance, GM plans are cheapest when the car is <12 months old & <12K milles, a little more expensive when <24 months <24K, and way more expensive after that.
  3. AND, these things only make sense if you plan on keeping the car a bunch of years or miles - because really, the kind of stuff that's expensive rarely fails in the first couple years when it's under the original warranty - the stuff fails when the car is 5-6-7-etc years old. But you have to buy the warranty when the car is young, with low miles, so you get the warranty cheap.
All that said, different warranties go for different prices for different cars:
  • For my '05 Aveo I bought an ADDITIONAL 5 yrs/50K warranty, which because the car had 13K on it already, gave me a total of 8 yrs/63K (and I'll never use up the 63k with the miles I drive). I paid $1,112 for the GM plan.
  • For my 06 Vette, an ADDITIONAL 5yrs/40k - which gives me a total of 8yrs/53K (again, I'll never go over on the miles). Incidentally, the Vette has a bunch of high-tech stuff, like "magnetic selective" ride which allows you to adjust suspension dampening, and also allows you to pay $1,600 if you have to change a shock out of warranty! Extended plan cost $1,535
  • For the 03 G35 I bought 5yrs/60K which gave me a total of 9yrs/99K for $1,735. And when the car was totaled last month, with 27 months left on the warranty, Infiniti agreed to refund me $1,100.
I think if you really plan to keep a car 6,7,8 years you run the risk of some type of expensive component failure. On luxury type cars the weak (and expensive) links seem to be the electronic modules.

So like I said, I'm still looking for a Mazda dealer who will sell me a warranty for the right price.

2009 GT @ invoice?

sorry but it sounds like you got ripped there.

Cuz with 2010 in the showroom already, you should be able to get at least 1-2 K UNDER invoice + factory incentive ...

For extended warranty, got warranty thru Geico, for just about hmm 5 bux extra a month. Thru 80 months 75 K miles whichever comes first with 250 dd. it covers almost the whole car except for certain wear item.

I know Mazda offers their own extended but I've never heard of anybody who got them. You can always ask.

oh well. anyway, congrats on ur new ride.

for those 1.5 grand prices, almost make the Extended Warranties worth it, but allow me to warn you....
getting a Dealer to give you one for the price you want isn't a problem, finding a competent dealer to work on your car might be.

Yeah, you overpaid for your car too...

Nonetheless, do what works for you, it seems to have so far, so Heres to your continued success.

2009 GT @ invoice?
He said invoice + $300 -$5000. Sounds like a deal to me.

And the ESP for his Corvette sounds like a prudent thing. Those things run something like fifty grand, and are definitely filled with crazy electronics.
