Just bought an RX8!!!
I just wanted to say hi to the forums here and introduce myself. My name is Pete if you couldn't tell from my username...
Here is my story:
I'm a total car-nut and I made a huge mistake. I had a 96 Mustang Cobra that was modded to the max. (well kinda) It was making 430 RWHP with a Vortech S-trim supercharger running just 8lbs. boost. I loved that car!!! Well, I was having theft problems living in Boston so I decided it was time to sell the car. I sold the car and was very depressed but thought I would get a practical car esp. since I was getting engaged. So I went out and bought an 03 Mazdaspeed Protege. It was a great car and I figured it already had all the bells and whistles so I wouldn't need to mod it. It came stock with Racing Beat suspension, Racing Hart wheels, a Kenwood system and much more. Where could I go wrong? Well, I went from 500 HP to 168 that is where. Plus, the car didn't have the styling that my Cobra did.
About the same time my Fiance traded in her car and bought an 03 Mazda 6. Well both cars were great and never caused any problems. We recently got married and bought a new house outside of the city. Now living further away and seeing the need for an SUV she decided to get one. I'm a die hard Ford/Mazda guy and she wanted something small so either an Escape or Tribute. We decided the Tribute better fit our needs. So we went back to the dealer to trade her year old car and buy the Tribute. Always loving the RX8 from the first time I saw it at the Mazda Rev It Up program I jokingly asked if I could take one for a spin. The salesman said since you've bought 3 cars from us in the last year and are in the process of buying another why not. I asked even if I'm not going to buy one but just want to see if it is as good as it looks?
He agreed...
So I start this baby up and a big smile comes to my face. I take it out for about 20 minutes and was able to push it somewhat. I took a rotary at excessive speed and around many tough corners. My Mazdaspeed handles great but this thing is so much better. I lay on the gas and the car has decent power but it is really smooth and seems pretty consistant throughout the powerband, something my Mazdaspeed doesn't. So we bring the car back to the dealer before buying her Tribute and I have a huge smile still, something I haven't had since seeing my Cobra drive away.
We get out of the car and I ask the salesman if he would sell us two cars tonight? He laughed and I told him I was serious. So we made a deal and I traded in my Mazdaspeed for a Black 04 RX8 with the black and red leather interior, heated seats, moonroof, Bose, etc. It is the Grand Touring pkg and has everything except the Navi. So we took the Tribute home on Friday night and I can't pick up my baby till Monday but I can't wait. I'll give you an update and pics when I get her home.
Sorry for rambling but I'm so excited about this car and it is good to feel this way again about a car!!!

This car definitely does bring about those types of emotions!
I test drove one "for the heck of it" too. I own a 93 twin turbo RX-7 that I had no intentions of selling, but after driving the 8, well, you know how it goes!
I've decided to wait for the '05's, but will be getting an 8 when they come out!
Congratulations. Great story!

Another one bites the dust. I was all set to buy a Mustang Mach 1 with 305 hp about two weeks ago, then on a whim I went and drove a yellow RX-8 since the dealer is only a few minutes away. I knew I wasn't going to buy one because it was about $5,500 more than the deal I was getting on the Mach 1. As of last Saturday, I have a yellow RX-8 sitting in my driveway. Once you drive it, you can't resist. A week later, I still often walk outside just to look at it sitting in the driveway. The coolest thing, since the color is called Lightning Yellow...the other night there was a killer thunderstorm. It was pitch black outside, and looking out my window I could just faintly see the car...then would come a big flash of lightning and that yellow car would just shine in it, lol.

Congrats and welcome to the cult I mean club. I bought the same thing GT without the nav. Love it.
I've had mine a year now and still open the garage door to admire it. I still have people pull up next to me to look at it. They are truely drop dead gorgoeus (SP) cars.

Hey Pete, welcome to the club.I just got one as well. What dealer are you dealing with?I live outside the city as well.Well way outside the city, but anyway I have had good luck in the past with the Mazda Gallery in norwood. The thing is I didn't buy my 8 there though. The Gallery didn't have the model I wanted,so I had to go elsewhere.regardless I got a great deal I think.

That is exactly what happened to me, and of course the salesperson knew the right places curves, corners and straight aways to get me all excited. 3 months now and I still get excited everytime I drive it.

Disclaimer: Side effects of buying a rotary include orgasmic driving pleasure, financial hardship from accessorizing, allergies to pistons and never being able to buy a non-rotor car again.
Ain't it great?!?
