Just came back from Zoom Zoom Live

I had a really good time at the event. Best part of the day was the runs with the new MX-5. All I need to say about that little roadster is, WOW. It was *almost* as fun to drive as the Rx8. I didn't see many 8s at there. I did see one blue Rx8 with a MS bodykit and some race wheels.

Biggest waste of time for the day, for me, was the precision driving. :p Even though it was a slow course I managed to get around in 27 seconds, but a ball came out.

At the performance challenge I managed to get 29 seconds. Which isn't bad, but it wasn;t good, IMO. I was aiming for a much better score.

I also got a chance to drive a Mazda6 and Mazda5.

mazda6-not a particularly good car IMO. I had to nearly floor it to get anywhere. To me it seemed like it had bad pick up off the turns.

mazda5-odd minivan/car. Doesn't drive all too well. Doesn't take corners well. But to it's credit it is a minivan. and I doubt it was designed to be autocrossed.

When I did the School of Zoom the instuctor who was in the car asked me if I knew how to handle the 8. I smiled at him and showed him exactly how I handle it. Needless to say he was impressed. :p

What was the target time for the Smoothness (ball) test and the performance challenge?
How many runs did you take?

I posted this in the ZoomZoom Live thread for orlando.

The next part (where I spent most of the day) was the Performance Challenge with the mx5. It was a blast. The target time was 25.5, most of the times of the day were 26-27 range, with a fair ammount of 25-26 and a few 24-25. The fastest time of the day was buy a guy who did a 24.2, There was also a pass by the 2000 Champion of the Star Mazda sires at 23.2 I think. Very fast.

My first Lap was a 26.8, then a 26.5 (slight drizzle that run, but the ground was dry) my 3rd run was a 26.1, then 25.9 and then 25.7, I did another 25.7 then as the cars tires were getting more and more worn I did my last 3 runs at 26, 26.2 and 27 flat (that last 27 was more of a fun run). It was harder to gauge the actual change in times cause almost every run was done with a differnt car, other than my 2 fastest that were in the same car. The cars were all even but some had better/worse tires. Still a blast.

The next was the 'smoothness' test, done in the MX5, you have a bowl full of 3 golf ***** on the hood, that bowl is in another bowl, and then that outter bowl is in a box. The goal is to try and get as close to the laptime (21.8) without spilling any golf *****. 2 secs added for each ball that go into the outside bowl and 15 secs for each that goes in the box. I ran this 3 times, each with out losing any *****, I got a 28.7, 26.5 and 23.4. I thought it was a neat idea.

Last was the 'match time' the goal was to get as close as possible (or match) the lap time of 32 secs. You got to pick the Mazda 3, Mazda 6 or MX5 (the mazda 5 wasnt out there ???) I did the Mazda 3 first, since I havent driven one yet. It was fun, I got a 31.7, so I was .3 off the target. Then I did the MX5 and got a 32.3, again .3 off....very very fun. All the cars could run faster or slower than the target, so it was all about finding a rythym.

I did notice that the pictures of the courses that are on the ZoomZoom Live site were not the same as the courses at the event here in orlando, I suppose this is due to the limitations of space and layout of parking lots, but it makes it hard to compare times, also the condition of the cars, tires, brakes, ect.

Also at my event I wanted to drive the new 5 waggon, but couldnt it wasnt there, also some of the miatas were broken so it made the wait times a little longer.

I went on Sunday and it was alot of fun. Shame I didn't meet anybody there!

On the performance challenge I did a 28,1 and 28,3 in my two runs and got a best time in an hour. The miata is very fun to drive and it reacts awsome. But I still like my 8 better!! (both manual)

With the 8 I felt I could have done better without the "teacher" sitting with me, I must say I expected more from the Rx-8 Challenge. (manual!

The one with the *****, it was BORING!!, I did a 26 with all 3 ***** inside the bowl but I didn't like it at all. (Automatic)

The challenge with the Mazda6 was ok but the closest we did was 29,6 (by my wife) (Automatic)

At the end I left with a mazda cap, t-shirt and a Bose Pen, no big prices but It was a very nice and fun event

Hello,
How do I find information about these events? Are they in a particular place or does it keep moving from city to city. I'm in Detroit.

Thanks,

The Rx8 teacher never even said a word to me. I literally hopped in, told him I owned an 8 so there was nothing to worry about.

about the only thing he said was he asked me how i liked the 8.

they should send you another reminder email a few days before the event. print it out and bring it.

but as zoomzoomh said, just show up around your time and they can look you up.

DONT FORGET YOUR LICENCE, even if you look old enough to drive the cars, they need the number!

you can set the car up howerver you want....dsc 7+ secs off, ect.

the 8's they use are also a variety of packages, both auto and manual, There was one base 6speed out there, so lightest and no dsc at all
