Just Did An Interesting Calculation (Gas Usage)
I have been kind of curious about this for a couple days, and decided to do a little math.
I drive my RS2000 about 250 miles per week to and from work, and wherever on the weekends. I've found that 250 is pretty average for a good week.
Say my RS gets about 28mpg (pretty average with what I've recorded in my time). I take the 13,000 miles that I drive (250 x 52) a year, and divide it by the number of miles I get per gallon. 13,000 \ 28 = 464 gallons of gas that I use every year.
Say an average RX-8 gets about 20mpg (I haven't driven an 8 at all, so I'm just using what I've seen on here a bit, and the EPA numbers). 13,000 \ 20 = 650.
Now say that gas is $3.40 a gallon (about what it is on base for me) constantly for a whole year. It's going to cost me $1,578 to drive my RS for a year in gas. On the otherhand, it's going to cost $1,950 a year to drive an RX-8. You divide those by 12, and you get $131 a month for the RS, and $162 a month for an RX-8.
So any time one of you guys feel like bitching because the RX-8 isn't getting enough gas mileage, think of the math. The money that you are going to save is so little, it's pretty much pointless.
I would gladly pay an extra $30 a month to drive the 8.

Excellent post! Most people never even give that much thought. I use to worry about the cost of using 91 gas, but after doing the math for the long run cost came to the same conclusion...so now I use 91 gas without worrying about it...the cost difference wasn't worth the worry...

I wish I got 20mpg lol
But I hear ya on the cost. I knew it would cost a bit to pay for gas when I got it but my previous vehicle got worse milage so I'm saving money in the long haul!

LoL Nah man. In England they have Escorts that are actually worth something (RS Turbo, RS Cosworth, RS2000). It's an Escort that was made for Rallies and such.
Although I have to admit it's kinda the redheaded stepchild of the RS world... LoL Oh well. It's a good car.
Unfortunately, since I'm over in England right now, I can't get an 8. AAFES (it's like a military Wal-Mart) doesn't carry Mazda, so yeah. And I'm sure as hell not going to go pay $50,000 for one (about what it would cost if I bought a new one in Pounds Sterling).
Once I get back to the States though... Yes!

Okay... Pretend you get to keep that $30 a month and you put it in an IRA. How much longer do you have to stay in the workforce so you can drive an RX-8 as opposed to something else.
You can justify anything, any way you want to.

I calculated the cost difference between my car (06 RX-8) and my mom's (06 Tribute). We get the same mileage (average of 23) although she uses regular instead of premium. I calculated the difference in price between her vehicle and mine based on the amount of miles I drove to and from work. It would be less than $10 a month difference. I mainly was calculating this as an estimate of the cost difference if I were to try using regular instead of premium (not likely that I would unless I didn't have the option). Basically minimal savings.

If you were to take your 30$ saving and invest it into a group mutual fund, that earns say, 15%, you would have an extra 6000$ by the time your done paying of the car.
Eh Who cares? Why in the world would someone buy a $30k car, knowing a flaw is bad gas milage, then complain about spending $30 more per month on gas?
I do feel bad for those getting horrible gas millage though (horrible for 8 standards even).

I just kinda laugh at the people that are trading in their SUVs to get a car with better mileage. If they did the calculations, they would know they won't save dick. Haha to them for being dumb. They spen $10K plus (with their trade in) on a new car, and it'll take them 8 years to make the difference.
