Just got my RX8 - Its AMAZING!!!!

grats! It's def. a ton of fun.
I calculate mpg by filling it when the light comes on & dividing that # of gallons into the # miles on the odo when the light comes back on. Not sure there's a more accurate method short of getting some real gauges. (I've hit 22 mpg on 100% highway drives & 15 mpg on 100% abuse drives )

I cannot imagine that being totally accurate. What if the light comes on while on a hill?
The way I have always done it with every car is to top off the tank NOT filling anymore after it clicks off. Reset the trip odometer. Drive the car till the light comes on (or down to 1/4 tank if you are one who believes you should never go below that) and try and get the same pump you filled on last time. Fill up the tank until the pump clicks off, again NOT filling anymore. Take the number of miles on the odometer and divide it by the number of gallons that you filled up with. You can now reset the odometer and start again. You can do this for every tank as long as you top off the tank and reset the odometer (does not HAVE to be the same pump, but that helps to get a "little" more accuracy).

I've had mine for four years, and found that if I fill to the 'click', without topping off, the fuel light will come on at exactly 50 litres (plus or minus 1%, 500ml)
I have a little chart that tells me what mpg or L/100km I got from that fill.
I don't have to fill up immediately or even pay attention to how many litres go in at the pump, no long division, no "gozinta's".
FYI I get 23 mpg (Imp) 19 US.

the accuracy gained by using the same pump is going to be negligible at best. it doesn't matter how many gallons you use or how far down the needle moves. miles since you reset your odometer divided by the number of gallons you pumped (as long as you don't try to top at all) will give you your mpg. unless you're looking to find out to the hundredth of a gallon/liter, that should give you a good average. if you want it to the hundredth of a gallon/liter then maybe you should look at using the same pump if you think that any of the pumps are giving you different reads on how many gallons were actually pumped.

Just got the RX8 - WOW! What a difference from the Cooper S.
Zoomy was in my driveway the next evening.
How do you check av. mpg?

There is nothing that states your mpg or your range on the tank. I know some cars that state how many miles you have left before you run out of gas. The 8 does not have one of those built in.
All the 8 has is an odometer and a two trip odometers...

If you want that kind of information, take a look at http://www.scangauge.com/ . No personal experience with it, but it's discussed here every now and then. It's sort of on my wish list, but an AFE short shifter is a lot higher.

here's how i calculate MPG:
1. on a full tank of gas reset the trip meter to "0."
2. go to the gas station when the gas tank is near "Empty."
3. refill the tank all the way and write down the total # of gallons refilled on the fuel pump display.
4. take the trip meter reading from your car and divide that by the total number gallons recorded above (step 3).
Example: if your trip meter reads 300 miles at the time of refill and you just refilled 15 gallons, then 300 miles/15 gallons = 20 MPG

Congrats and welcome to the forum
My wife had a MiniS for a while. Talk about a go-cart for grown ups. They are fun
Best way to check mileage is to never start. Your going to get 10mpg less than your old MiniS so save yourself the head ache.
You should get 18-22 depending on how you drive.
