I'm not spot-on about this, but I'm pretty sure the "R" flash is the recall flash. It was released two days before the stop delivery notice went out to dealers.

"R" is for recall....hahahaha. Well, maybe anyway.

I couldn't agree more. I got it today and its like driving a different car from "M". I never had the "N". :D

Again, I agree. I think the car is now more fun to drive...like it was when I bought it last Apr '04.

on the battery and starter look at the tsbs located in the tech section. look for the sticky thread under the big red title that says "announcement READ THE STICKIES". as for what a flash is etc you could search for "flash" or read the sticky thread that is title " explanation o fklm flash" etc etc.

please read soem of these threads. many of you rquestions will be answered

ther have only 5 flash upgrades including R for the 2004 cars. 2005 cars have only had 2 of those 5. If you only get flash 5 times on Bourbon street you are very unlucky.

I had the same service dept. give me two different responses. Last Dec for the "M" flash they volunteered it when I had the car in for something else. Today, I brought the TSB dated Feb '05 in with me to a different service advisor and he was stand-off ish about it. Told me I just had it done in Dec. and that I probably don't need it. Of course I pushed the issue and said the TSB in my hand is dated FEB - 2005 so check it anyway. Thankfully the Tech was on the ball and told the advisor - yep and there was a newer one out then the TSB I had when he checked the WDS.

Damn - do we always have to do the leg-work for these guys. Nothing pisses me off more then incompetent employees who act like they know what they are doing but don't have a clue!

if you donlt want a flash just put a padlock over the odb2 connector. right through the wires. that'll learn em.

I didn't hear the recall had anything to do with the flash.

My dealer in Tampa knows nothing about flashes and as for recalls, he pulled my vin up on the computer and there are no recalls. He gave me the print out showing this. I just bought my 05 last week with a build date of 9/04

There are only a few actual "recall"s for the RX-8, including one that just came out. Except for the latest one, the others probably don't apply to your vehicle with that build date. There are, however, a bunch of Service Bulletins--not recalls--so go to the link below to see which, if any, of the bulletins apply to your VIN.

R flash, Recall, Less power lag

- I don't think people are dreaming up the increased power in lower rpms and smoother power delivery. I'm not a torque or power junkie, but I feel a big difference after the flash. (Got it yesterday)

-I do not think the R flash is the recall. After I went in yesterday for the flash, they mentioned that they will need to call me in soon for the True recall work. Most of the techies do not know exactly what will need to be done yet.

Best,
JOnathon

When I went from 'M' to 'N' I noticed significant improvements in throttle response. Over time, my throttle response wasn't what I was used to, so I cleared the memory using the '20 brake taps in 8 secs' method, and I immediately had improved throttle response again.

So, if a reflash clears that memory, that complicates the post-reflash butt-dyno reading. Not to say they aren't adding smoothness, driveability and power under the curve - it might just be difficult to tell.

All these flashes is making me wonder if we are being visited by strange invaders from another world like in War of the Worlds. :D
