I was thinking about getting a mazdaspeed shift ****. Always liked the way they looked. Not too big of a fan of the voodoo, looks way too big. How does it sit in your hand when you're shifting, DarkBrew?

Oh, and I have to say, I took it up to redline about 10 times tonight. It is just so much more enjoyable clicking through the gears than it was before. Hope my car forgives me for the added abuse this shifter is going to have on it. Never had more fun in the 8, though.
You may copy my set up if you wish but please change the colour of the stitching.
I really like the Voodoo ****. It feels great and I never noticed an issue going from 5th to 6th. ( even before Voodoo )
I treat my 8 to redline on a regular basis.

Been thinking of one of these ever since I got Zoomy. Stock shifter has been OK once it broke in, but it does not have that crisp snick-snick feeling that a Miata I test drove had.

no,

the early ones. i have one off the first 25 i think... i did get the upgraded kevlar cone... but the 5th 6th gear thing has not bothered me enough to bug richard about it..

I know I'm necro-posting this, but I figured it would be better to post in a thread that already addresses this than to make a whole new one for no reason. I just installed my AF sts last weekend and the feel is wonderful. It's completely different from stock and a very cool "metal-on-metal" bolt-action feel just like everyone said. My only concern was the "whirring" or "whining" sound when shifting into 2nd gear primarily. It occasionally makes the sound when shifting into other gears but almost every time shifting into 2nd. It doesn't sound bad it's just making me wonder if that is expected, what is causing it, and will it go away or is it just characteristic of the modification?

It is completely normal.
Those are your synchros doing their job

Did you remove the sound deadening BS under the shifter boot?
Are you ready for this . . . .
Remove the sound deadening to make it quieter

^^^^

Yes
It makes it quieter while in gear.
It seems to make the shifter put pressure on the gear.

Try pulling back just a little bit on the shifter while in 2nd gear. (Clutch out driving)
Does it get a little bit quieter? If so, time to remove the stuffing.

My ONLY complaint about the shifter is that it makes me want to buy a ton of other mods. :P

If anyone is interested in an alternative to short shifting, try the Voodoo Magnum Shift *****. They "virtually" shorten the shift and has nice weight without compromising the silky smoothness of the stock shifter personality.

^^^
I have a voodoo **** AND the AFE SS

Great combination

The **** alone only shortens the length of the shifter, it does not shorten the throw of the shifter
