K&N hotair intake fix?
About a half a week after I bought my 8, I went out and got the K&N. Hadn't read anything like a moron and just trusted their name. Now I'm trying to figure out if I can salvage the thing and not have to buy a new one... this way I won't be a sucker, right?...
Anyone have thoughts on just fiberglassing a similar enclosure to the injen system that would fit up to the K&N?
Wouldn't be too hard to do... but I don't want to waste my time or inevitably itch for days if its a useless DIY...

Haha, I really thought about doing that, but went for the RB ram air to accomplish a smiliar result.
At this point I just want to figure out if there's a reason NOT to do it... When it gets back from the shop I'll be trying it I think...
I'm a bit afraid its going to resonate even more... I don't think the people I pass at WOT appreciate it... but I do love the sound as is...

@cornholio, I doubt it, but any chance you got temps or afr before/after? I was thinking about doing that, but after looking at the injen they've got extra airflow, and though its hot, I definitely don't want to choke the thing out.
Good idea though, looks like a cheap and easy thing to try, Cobb will be here shortly so I'll play with it and see :D
@Krazed Because I'm still a sucker for aftermarket parts, I like the added engine note, and i really feel like if I can get it a bit colder it'll end up helping out... And I like trying to make something custom to fix a problem

Thats exactly what I did. I figure at cruising speed plenty of fresh air is being forced into the area of the intake. Who cares whats happening at idle. The air duct should solve your problem.

Yea I tried the lowes mod haha. THe V2's filter is offset from the hold in the bumper, so I couldnt get it straight on. So I returned the piece and got my $6 refund haha

Hmm... this was sort of the type of thing I was thinking of:
BHR Intake Shroud
Except obviously with fiberglass... to keep it cheap... wonder if this thing helps. I'll probably just do the lowes mod mated to the ram air duct...

The only solution is to get rid of it. K&N makes good products but this one is a poor design considering the way the car is designed.
I have temperature data posted in the 100's of other K&N Typhoon threads. Between the K&N and the AEM I was seeing as much as 40 degrees of difference at cruise. At idle the K&N would get as hot at 190 degrees on 115 degree days here in Arizona.
Yes, I saw as much as 192 degree intake temps.
I know some people like the noise but if that's the case then put a baseball card in your wheels or something because you're robbing yourself of performance with this thing.
The other problem is the K&N uses a larger than stock MAF tube to fool the computer into running leaner fuel mixtures. This works great in the upper RPMS but anything in closed look compensates with fuel trims. Resetting my PCM resulted in the car not being able to idle for about 2 to 3 drive cycles. I would see as much as 19% positive fuel trim. Considering the max is 24% that's quite a lot.
You're better off going back to stock. Much better.
