kick in point

I was wondering will the 8 have a "kick in point" where the engine will shift into higher cams at a certain rpm. Like, the hondas and acuras have the infamous "vteck kicked in"

plz no flames i was just wondering, i would never compare the rx-8 to a honda:D

Rotary engines don't have cams or valves so the RX-8 engine will not have any variable valve timing like VTEC. I've never driven a rotary myself, but the power delivery should be pretty linear across the whole RPM range.

I've driven a couple 13Bs, they're totally linear. I would imagine the RENESIS would behave the same.

As has been stated, there are no cams to worry about.

Depending on how the transition is handled, there might be something that you would feel when one of the intake paths opens up, but it shouldn't be near the same as the cam kick.

If you have never driven a rotary you are in for a TREAT! The engine is smooth as silk. It is definitely linear, especially an NA (non-turbo).

Didn't the 13B in the FC (and GSL-SE) have two extra intake ports that opened up at a certain point in the rev range? I believe so, but I need a rotorhead to confirm. Anyway the two 13Bs I've driven didn't have any surges of power.

The 89-91 FC NA had auxiliary ports that opened up at higher rpm. Also, the venturi effect of the intake manifold kicked in just before 4000 rpm. So, there was a slight surge at that rpm, but as long as you held 1st gear into 7-8k+, you never noticed it on the upshifts.

So, yes, it was linear for the most part, but if you got the revs low, and accelerated without downshifting (and blipping), you'd feel a nudge at about 4K.

B-Nez is right. The older 13B rotaries have 5th and 6th port valves that open around 3800 RPM to allow more intake air. I have a 91 RX-7 convertible and if you're accelerating hard you hear the "whine" of the rotary change pitches right around 3800-4000 RPM and feel a little (very slight) boost. It is barely noticeable. There is also a variable dynamic intake (whatever the hell that means) valve that pops open at high RPMs to change the flow of intake air somehow. The intake systems on the older rotaries are WAY over-engineered. I believe the intake on the Renesis is a totally different setup.

Well put, 3Rotor. Yes FnL, you WILL be in for a treat. Once bitten by the rotary bug, you may never go back! (^_^) As for me and my transition back to NA (and about 80hp less), I will most certainly miss the feeling when my second turbo comes online at 4500rpm. I'll take that kick over VTEC's "kick" anyday!
