Lesson learned with custom tip installation. Melted shouds
So this has been slowly happening over the past few months here... since pictures are worth a thousand words:
![](http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/4429/burn1li0.th.jpg)
![](http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/513/burn2fc5.th.jpg)
It was from my stock exhaust with the custom Magnaflow tips installed. Now the tips themselves didnt do it, my theory is that since I had to cut the original tips off the new ones were welded on too far back and the superheated exhaust gasse rise (naturally of course) and just caused what you see.
Now I must go on the search and try to find a pair of exhaust shrouds. Any pointers? Id love to just buy them off someone that might be getting a mazdaspeed bumper, or knows of a "parts" car thats around smoewhere.
Any tips would be appreciated.

I know there are the shiny "bling bling" exhaust shrouds from Mazda directly but besides not liking how they look, and how over priced they are.... they do not come all the way out and wouldnt protect in the areas I would assume?
Has anyone with a racing beat exhaust ever had any problems with melting on the exhaust shrouds?

I like the silver shrouds on some 8s... Silvers, blacks, and blues can handle the bling and they might give better standup to heat - been considering getting some and your troubles may be just what I needed to push that decision. Still not sure I like the silver gas caps -
Saw an odd UFO today with silver gas cap encircled by small gromets. Car shape similar to an 8, but pistion engine, had 3 or four 'gills' sculpted into the body where our air intake is, behind the front wheel - but these seemed to be just decorative and it had an odd insignia on the back a kind of cross with a devil's tail - maybe its just a twisted anchor - anyone know what kind of car that was?

I saw a black Tiburon today. I haven't seen one in person in years. A girl I went to high school with got a silver/gray one for a b-day present. Her parents ended up taking it back and getting her an Accent instead. LOL I'm not sure why exactly.

I have a question: how did you get them welded on? did you just cut the original tips off at the base (i.e. cut the whole pipe)?

Mine are the 7.5" long version. Yes, the factory tip was cut off, but it wasn't the whole pipe (depending on what you mean with "whole pipe". If it is the whole pipe that is the tip itself, then yes, it's the whole
). Just as much as it was necessary to get rid of the stock tips. Then, there was plenty of space to weld the new ones on. I suppose they stick out enough that they don't melt the plastic. Maybe yours are too close to the shroud?
I'm still thinking about getting the exhaust finishers so that they can protect the shroud, even if it doesn't seem to be necessary. They are damned expensive for what they are though. I wish there was an aftermarket source for them just like for the strakes...

The same could be said for the rx-8.

Whats to be unhappy about? Chr1s is speaking the truth, no more, no less. He doesnt say anywhere in this thread how he is unhappy with the car, not that I have seen. The RX8 isnt the car to end all other cars, it is simply, JUST another car. A car with both strengths, and weaknesses.
On another note, That Tibby site is well designed, love the drag and drop feature to change photos.

you need to lighten up!
What I was trying to say was that I'm willing to put with the small quirks of the RX-8 because I like the car, just as I will be willing to put up with the quirks and problems of an Alfa.

I completely melted one of my shrouds and a portion of my bumper due to a bad coil. I have the greddy exhaust installed. I was crusing down the interstate one night when my check engine light started flashing and fire began to shoot out of my tailpipes! The dealership said it was due to a bad coil
Worst part is, the melted bumper was not covered under warranty due to a modified exhaust. I should have gotten the Racing Beat exhaust instead.
