License plate question

Does mazda use a special bolt to hold on the license plate ? I bought my 8 about 6 months ago used. When the dealership put my plate on, it felt as if the bolts they used were not addiquite. The plate wasn't going anywhere so I didn't think much of it. Today I tried to take the plate off as I was issued a new one. When I turn the screws, they do not come out. It's as if there is some kind of nut back there that is turning with the screw. I forced one side and broke whatever is behind the back fender to catch the bolt. Now the plate is just dangling from one side. Any help is appreciated !!!

I replaced all the original bolts years ago when I got rid of the dealership plate frame.

Maybe they're not screws at all, but rather fasteners. There are several different types requiring different removal techniques. One type has a phillips head part that you turn 1/4 turn CCW using light pressure with a screw driver and then use your fingernail around the base of the fastener to pop it out. If that's not what you have, take a pic and post here.
