life span of the renesis

i know it hasnt been long enough to ask this question,
but i just thought id throw it out there to see what people's
opinions are. what is the life span of the rx8, given that it
is well taken care of and not driven too hard, altho it gets
it regular workouts. or a better question yet, how long
did the rx7s last before their engines died out, if anyone
can shed some light on this topic, it would be greatly appreciated.

I thought I remember someone saying that apex seals usually go at 100-120k...

Given the parameters you state (proper maintainance and non-abusive driving), and adding only "normally aspirated" to the equation, the Renesis should outlast most any piston engine. I'm betting mine will go 200k miles, although I trade cars too often to ever personally see that many miles....even on my beloved '8. :D

FBs and FCs would easily top 200k, and some would get as high as 300.

Considering the forum, isn't the better line "I feel the need...."?

No.

A better line is "you're not happy unless you are going mach-3 with your hair on fire".

How can you ask what the lifespan of a car is when its 'life' has only been 2 years? The car has only been out since 2004, so this question is sort of silly.

I don't know of any owners that have yet to drive 50,000 miles a year, so the odds that someone has 100,000+ miles on their 2 year old car is highly unlikely.

I had 50000+ kilometres on my RX-7 when I sold it, and its still running now.
Considering that car was 5 years old, and it had forced induction and none of the new technological improvement that Renesis had.
I think the Renesis could easily last longer.

But it all again depends on the drivers driving style.
If you push it hard no doubt you are going to get an early wear and tear in the engine.
Its hard to measure and engines life really.

The highest mileage 8 I've heard of so far is 50K with no problems. I've owned five RX-7s and all were between 120-150K and running fine when I sold them. A properly maintained 12A & 13B NA rotary will run well over 200K. While there's no track record on the Renesis yet I would imagine it would be as good if not better than previous versions.

And QBallz, where did you hear that from? Do you or anybody know someone with an 8 over 100K? Don't spread information like that around when you're not sure of the facts. No wonder why rotaries get a bad name.

Paulie,

It's 'cause some people prefer to make stuff up when they have no facts. Seems to happen on a regular basis in the internet forum world.

"This is what they call a target-rich environment"

---------------
Having worked at a Mazda dealership back in the mid-80's it wasn't unusual to see older RX-7s in our shop with 200,000 plus miles on them. The general concensus is the rest of the car crapped out FAR before the engine did. The early cars (RX-2, RX-3, rotary pickup, etc.) did have apex seal issues, but after 1979, they were pretty solid if you kept up on the oil level kept changing the oil. On my 85 RX-7, I changed the oil and filter every 2500. The oil coming out looked like slightly toasted honey.

There's something about only three moving parts and no reciprocating motion that helps the longevity of the motor.

I put 45k on it and was burning about a quart and a half an oil change.100 to 120 is a good number maybe 150 if you baby it.

You're car's not burning oil - it's consuming it. There's a difference with the rotary engine.

And this is based on exactly what? Your opinion? If you have facts, please provide them so that we're all enlightened.

The fact is that you don't have facts,so please state your opinion for what it is -- simply an opinion.

If you look at the facts you'll find your opinion is way inaccurate compared to the majority of situations.

My 81 RX-7 had pretty poor maintenance and was driven very hard yet ran fine at 153K. Had I decided to keep it I don't doubt at all it would have run well over 200K.

It's usually not the engine that goes, it's the rest of the parts that become too expensive to justify dumping cash into that causes an RX to get junked/parted.

In my opinion, rotary engine technology with respect to apex seal performance has been pretty stable for quite a while. The RX7 club website has a large amount of information available.

Is information available on the RX-7 website pertinent to the Renesis? Is the apex seal performance better for the Renesis? Should we ever hear of prematurely worn out engines?
