Limited Slip Diff

Ok so just a question im a tad confused about... for the Base model 05' AT it didnt come with a LSD, does a LSD transfer power to both wheels or transfer power to the wheel that isnt spinning to regain control??? I feel like a noob but id assume a RX-8 without a LSD still has power to both the rear wheels and not just one correct??? i hope to god im right because im going to be pissed if i only have 1 wheel... someone please clear this up heh... i feel like a major noob but im in a haze

easy way to test this.

hold the brakes and hold the gas full on. let go of the brake and do a small burn out.

see how many lines you left in the pavement.

1 line = no lsd, 1 wheel power
2 lines = lsd, 2 wheel power

you have power to both rear wheels, duh. but its when you are burning out that you only have 1 power wheel (the wheel thats not slipping.)

in case im wrong. great info here. http://www.google.com/search?client=...=Google+Search

lol does the 8 even have enough torque to do a burnout for a 4 port auto??? lol ill try it but what your saying is during normal driving a accelerate with both wheels, not one but when my rear tires start to spin only 1 spins?

Ok so that doesnt bother me as much.. My friend originally confused me saying i only had power to one wheel and the other one was "just there for the ride" im glad you cleared that up /wipe drenched sweat off forehead lol, and as for the puddle , thing is i know i cant do the brake thing as ive tried hah, ill try a puddle in the open where its safe... Thanks a ton Kersh, im so glad you explained it to me... :DD

P.S. how much would a LSD cost? should i go straight to mazda if i want one?

i'd go to mazmart.

i dont know how easy it would be to just bolt one in the car. and for the presumed price of at least a few hundred dollars, i'd definitely look at something else. a catless straightpipe is good for around 10whp. other midpipes are less, but there are gains there for a few hundred bucks. fluid motorsports is coming out with one. so is racing beat. i'd check both out. or get a high flow catted midpipe.

i have the turboxs full 3" exhaust with catless straightpipe. no complaints. $500.

i have the accessport, i can mask the error code if i go to an inspection station.

and i plan on lowering my car soon. in md, lowered cars are an immediate waiver cause you cant go on the rollers.

worst case, i put the stock cat back and then take it back out.

if i had the money, i would get teamrx8s DTM class cat. unfortunately it costs ~$650 for the cat alone.

yeah with cat off it WILL NOT pass emissions hell even with a bad cat it will not pass emissions! So if u have to get emissions the only thing u can do is the supercat!....high flow cat

if you're worrying about emissions, drive out of town, any place with not too high of a population (say college station, thats where i go to get inspected) they wont do a test for emissions.

as for lsd, power is sent to the rear, limited slip, is exactly what is sounds like. its limits the slippage, e.g. for every 5 rotations of 1 tire, the other will have to at least rotate once, somewhere along those lines.

open diff. if 1 tire has more traction than the other, all of the power will be sent to the tire with least traction (1 spinning tire, other standing still)

^as far as i know for inspection(at least in pa when i lived there) if your car is registered in an "emission" county then emissions had to b done there was a seperate sticker from normal safety inspection so say you are registerd in a county that needs emissions and go to one without they will not b able to do it because they will see ur registration is for an emissions county.....

the only way around it is to register it in a county without emissions however u have to b able to give an address there(parents, grandparetns, friend etc)

correct, we just gave them the address of a friend who lives in college station each time

nice, yeah i got to a puddle today and it i got to the redline with the tires still spinning (ive had virtually no tread for awhile) and let off, car shook a tad and i went back and saw 2 tires, then i believe after awhile 1 stopped and the other one kept going until i let off

I've seen LSD's starting at as little as 8-900 up to 2k for the 8. I talked to someone at KAAZ and i heard they had a pretty good deal for an LSD for us - unfortunately i lost contact w/him and i can't seem to find the product he was referring to...

why don't you take a look at g3tr3ddyt0gr3ddy (sorry if i mispelled it) - he has a lot of OEM parts for sale in the Fluidmotorsports vendor thread - maybe you can pick up an OEM from there and fit it on - that is if it fits of course - not sure tho...

04 4AT GT has LSD. Old school talk, LSD = Posi, at least when it comes to cars

the burnout thing isnt an acurate test. sometimes you get lucky and both will spin. Jack up the back of the car, with your hands spin one of the wheels, if the other spins then you have an lsd. It should spin opposit of the wheel your spinning (ie, you spin the wheel foward, the other will spin backward)..
Some automatics came with lsd. I have an 04 auto and have lsd, it has the whole "sport" package like the manual ones came with, id assume that is why it has it.

A car without LSD sends power to both rear wheels as long as there is adequate traction (no wheelspin). As soon as one wheel starts to spin, all of the power is sent to the slipping wheel and there is very little forward traction.

There are several types of LSD, but in general the idea is to prevent the above scenario. An LSD maximizes the traction of both wheels and makes best use of the engine's torque and the tires' friction. I refuse to own any car without LSD.
