Limp mode or compression loss?
Was driving the 8 today it was a pretty hot day and i started up from a stopsign reved to about 7k and then it sputter a bit seemed like fuel cut then it died started it up tried it again same thing happened was able to drive home below 7k but it had two or three random cuts around 3- 4 k and one at idle for a long time the car was running for like 3 hours today so does limp mode do that and is compression loss let you drive sometimes or can you not move at all or run the car kinda freaking out my mechanic says it may be because of the cat
|
Also i have a pending misfire code (it misfired a few times after it hit the 7k shut off or w.e and the cat efficency code and a network code (probably because i bumped into the code reader
|
If it was compression loss you would have no power and just be over rev. But also if your having miss fire it cant cause that, id recommend a compression test and a pressure test on your fuel pump cause if no fuel pressure can cause stalling and loss of power. Its happened in my mazda 3 and my buddys 8

If its your cat then your car is being stopped up by emission this can cause carbon build up and can choke your car out, pretty much like suffication to the engine this could cause it to shut off, but still run some codes to see if its a fuel pump issue cause sometimes it could cause stalls like you mentioned and a miss fire will just make you run rough but still fix it

Also i thought if fuel pumps go they just go and stop working entirely

It only misfires once when i rev past 7k then the fuel cuts and the car shuts off even if i throw it in neutral i slowly reved it to 7k and held it there and it didnt shut off but idk maybe because it stoped limping one time it stalled smelled like alot of oil then the next time it stalled smelt more like coolant third time had a burnt rubbery plastic smell then the 4th had just a normal exhaust smell so idk if that makes a different maybe because combustion is wasnt complete when it misfired back fired and fuel cut im replacing the cat friday its been causeing problems for awhile maybe the 8 had enough of its shit haha

Alright ill have to check all this out tomorrow my mechanic also said it could be because it was extremely hot today and the engine didnt like it it was like 95 degress with 80% humidity air movement sucked even flying down the highway doing 80

As far as the burning oil smell goes take a piece of paper (has to be white) get someone to rev your car 2-3 at 4000-7000rpm and put paper behind exhaust if you see oil on paper then your seals might be going out, but if its just water or a clear fluid its normal

yeah humidity is hard on alot of engines I work as a technician at a dealership and we get A/C probs alot but its not its cause of the heat an humidity

Yeah thats what the mechanic was telling me if it that know of anyway to prevent that? Or no maybe this will all go away tomorrow thatd be great dont have to fix anything not enough air could cause a misfire right? And i heard the maf sensor can throw it into limp but isnt limp usually set at 3k the strange thing is the whole 7k fuel cut thing had me panicing haha thought it died on me

I did a few times (probably alot i got used to doing it so much on the highway like every shift to 4th) andhe was telling me a couple of the cars at his shop wouldnt even crank over at all either

I thought it was bad to redline them without a load on the engine lol ive been wrong alot today haha im going to try driving it again in a bit its cooler out now im hoping it just needed a rest haha

No its better to redline with no load, cause you get the full power and blows more carbon build up out of your engine, if you do it while your driving your doing yourself no good cause your engine is at high rpms and its already burning, but when you do it after youve slowed down the engine cools some and the carbon begins to lay and calm down then when you are at a stop you can blow all of that out. Do this everytime you park, and if you drive over 30miles and come back home go outside after your car has cooled off and crank the car give it 5-10 mins to warm up and blow out the carbon then turn it off and it will make your apex seals last 3xtimes longer but only do this after the car has warmed up ok
If i am losing compression think a decarb will help at this point or probably not |

Makes sense if my seals arent already gone ill start doing that haha

Alright ill look into thank you very much for the advice. But now that im putting it all together seems like today it was just being sufficated bad cat (most likely gutted) and crazy humidity choking the air coming in maybe tomorrow will be better if it was compression loss it would just die not start etc wouldnt even be able to reach 7k right? It would Struggle to get to 3k it didnt have that problem could be fuel pump so ill check that and ill check the seals with a piece of paper anyways wouldnt it have a bit of oil burnt to it due to the oil injection for the seals anyways though?

With compression loss it couldnt pull, youd loose all power it be like a turtle and wouldnt pull the car youd rev the rpms but thats all, and for the burning oil smell with it being so hot your engine may have just been burning more oil then it would regualry, so check your oil level and coolant too. And sometimes if engines get too hot or too much humidity they will shut off but its rare though. And yeah if you have any questions shoot me a message id be more then happy to help and if I dont know id find out and study up an let you know.
