I use to drive a GTO. This car have not a powerful start. But let that engine work and you will fill the power that never ends not even in the 4 th gear. I stoped at 126 mph. Never reached that speed in the GTO.

I don't know if anyone has said it, but i went on a really fun drive with my friend who owns a 318ti. Anyways we were stopped on the side of the road, and I got out, with my car still running (I have the advanced keyless entry), he got in and tried to drive off. The car just shut itself off because I had the key in my pocket. I just sat back and laughed at him.

If you haven't tried the car with the DSC and TC off, you're missing a treat. I ran in an autox last week (first time in the car with street tires), and you'll be amazed just how much rubber you can leave in 1st AND 2nd gear. I'm not talking about 7k rpm drop clutch. Just wind up to around 3k and let it out. On my first run, others commented about how much wheelspin I left (doesn't help times though). It's just neat that it will do much more than you think it will with the low torque. Now if I can just get my hands on some proper Hoosiers....:D

A very enjoyable thread to read, I have only had my car a bit more than a week and have read so many threads complaining about the car (not just on this forum) that I thought I just made the purchasing blunder of my lifetime. This thread has cheered me up quite a bit, so thanks to everyone. One of the items I like the best about the car is I can fit comfortably in it, I am 6' 2" Tall @ 260 Lbs (give or take a little
) and I could only fit in a 350Z and this car, was actually pursuing a 350Z pretty hard when I decided to check out the RX8, drove both of them and the RX8 won me over. Hope to have it many years, it is my daily driver. - Jeff

Welcome aboard Jeff! Wait till warm weather and you can really get out there and DRIVE that thing. You're going to love it. After 3 years and 34K mi I still enjoy driving her every day! I signed in at the over 40 club, boy how time flies. Look forward to the end of winter, need to get a rim/wheel pkg for next year, for the remaining of this year steal the wife's SUV on the bad days.

This is not necessarily true. If there is any difference at all, it certainly isn't enough to say all hell breaks loose. Holding the button trips the computer into an error condition which is why the DSC light stays on.

^When you turn DSC off, it will let your car slide sideways without hindering you. If you hold it down and turn both DSC and TC off, it will let you launch your car, as well as slide sideways. TC is to help you get traction if you rev it to 6k then dump the clutch. With TC off, you wheels will just start spinning.

What doesDSC actually DO in the car- does it affect the brakes or what?

DSC is awesome on the RX8 I have to say .
Just came back from a hillclimb event - 9km of very tight uphill wet road . My first ever such event . My time was within 15sec of the fastest of the day (around 5.30 min) and I beat out lots of seasoned rally drivers - admittedly many were driving older less powerfull cars but still ....
anyway It was not my driving because I'm not that good . DSC gives you huge confidence on a wet road when you are on the edge . I'm sure a better driver would run with it off but it allows me to look like a much faster driver than I am .

Power!!
Both DSC and TC use a combination of individual wheel braking and throttle modulation. It measures wheel speed and slip angle and applies brakes and cuts throttle as appropriate when the car gets too out of sorts and it attempts to keep it from spinning out of control or losing traction.
It does a nice job because it gives you some room to play and have fun. It's not as conservative as some other German car companies.

If that's true then how come I can slide the car sideways through corners, do donuts, and spin the car 180 from a standstill - just by turning off DSC. No 7 second holding needed. What exactly can I not do by just pressing the DSC vs holding?
This separation of DSC and "traction control" puzzles me. I have seen no mention of separate traction control system in any literature - where are people getting this from?

This doesn't make any sense as by your own admission you can't have DSC on and TC off. In order to slide, you need to spin the tires - so it seems as though you are describing the same thing - perhaps because there is no difference? 
If it was true that you can't spin the tires without turning off "TC", then it should be impossible to spin the tires on launch or do donuts by simply turning off DSC. This is clearly not the case. This trick to "really" disable the system seems more steeped in myth then fact to me.
