Locked Out

Locked Out
Well I go down to my car this morning to leave for work and I realize that I left my laptop upstairs. No big deal I think, I'll just start the car and let it warm up a tiny bit since it seems to perform a bit better that way, and I'll go back upstairs and get my laptop. I have done this all through the cold winter and never had a problem. So I go back upstairs, get my laptop and come back down to my car and to my complete surprise when I go to open the door its locked and the engine is running.
I don't know how it got locked, I must have accidently hit the lock button, though I really don't think I did. Anyways I was under the impression that this car would not lock with the keys in the ignition. I'm thinking that I maybe hit the actualy lock on the door rather than the power lock button. Mabye it can't sense when you lock the doors that way. Again though I really don't see how I would have hit that button without noticing its really strange.
Its funny I always check the door to make sure its not locked before I close it when I'm warming it up and this is the one time I forgot to check. Fortunatley I was at home so I just went back upstairs and got my spare key. Which brings me to another issue. With my spare key I tried using the keyless entry to unlock the door and it wouldn't work. I had to physically insert the key into the lock and turn it like the prehistoric days, it just felt wrong.
Anyone know why it let me lock the door, I could have sworn I read somewhere that it would unlock the door if the keys were in the ignition.

I don't know why it locked, but my wife likes to leave her keys in her Honda Pilot while it's in the garage. The problem is that the door will lock for no reason so she has to keep the window down. I didn't believe her at first but it happened to me.
Don't ask me why she leaves the keys in the car in first place. After 32 years of marriage you learn to just let somethings go.
I don't know about the keys in the ignition not allowing the doors to lock but I don't think that would be correct. Thank goodness you had your spare.

If the above were true the car wouldn't be able to be locked when I'm driving or idling, right?

I think they lock when you start the car.....can't remember.
Also, note, the keyfob is designed not to function when there is a key in the ignition. Thus, no lock/unlock or trunk pop from the keyfob if you have a key in the ignition.

Ok I just went out to lunch and tested this. It will unlock the doors if the key is in the ignition but in the off position. I pressed the lock button and it immediatley unlocked both doors. However if the engine is running it will let you lock them. Which I did already know and just didn't realize this morning. Wouldn't make sense if you couldn't lock the doors while driving. In reference to Mugatu's post I have locked the doors several times when driving late at night through some of the less desirable area's of Boston.
It just surprised me that they locked on me this morning. I guess I must have accidently hit the lock button when I was getting out of the car.
