Lojack
#2
Had it on my last three cars - its a one-off fee (around $700 a few years back - may be cheaper now) - and never had to use it. Some insurance companies give you a discount for having LoJack - I saved about $200-$300 over three years. Depending on what kind of neighbourhood you live/work in it might be a good idea.

You obviously have internet access...did it not occur to you to try www.lojack.com?

what I heard is that Lojack is not all that great since not all police dept use it. And also if you car is stolen and taken out let's say outside the county limits the system might not work anymore.
I say if your car is going to be stolen, I'd make the theif really work for his money. I'd get something like the black widow alarm kit where it comes with a keychain that tells you that the alarm is going off up to I think 1 mile away. I'd also put in a hidden switch for the clutch sensor, if the car is manual and it has a clutch sensor. A switch for the gas pump. Steering wheel lock(which I know it doesn't really work) um...um...that lock you stick on the foot brakes....can't remember name. And if I really had money I'd customize the drivers seat to have a built in tazer. Just in case the battery cables are disabled a backup battery.
I have other ideas but they are more extreme in nature...hehe...like a poisonous snake that comes out of its cage and bites the thief.

In my experience dealers don't actually install Lojacks anyway. A Lojack rep comes to the dealer to get your car, takes it to their place, installs the Lojack there, then returns it to the dealer for you to pick up. Their story is they do it this way for security reasons - they don't don't want anyone outside their little circle of trusted employees knowing any more about how it works than necessary. That way there's less chance of information on how to defeat one getting out.
I have one on my Mercedes but haven't had to use it.
Anyway, I'd think you'd be able to have the Lojack dealer itself do the install. Wonder if they'd come up with some type of clandestine pick-up and drop-off routine when dealing with you.

Y&Y: Lojack now offers an add-on function that will alert you via pager, SMS message, recorded voice message, etc, whenever your car is moved without you being in it. Apparently it uses a couple of coded tags that you and another authorized driver hang on your keyring. If the vehicle is moved without one of those tags in the proximity, the Lojack "phones home" and their central system alerts you.
shkeller55: Lojack.com doesn't give the name of the local rep, only the names of dealerships that sell it.
