Long Road trips

What's the longest road trip anyone here has done in their 8? like 1000+ mile adventures and what's the farthest anyone has driven without stopping to sleep?
I'm preparing for a road trip to montreal for a bachelor party. I will be forced to drive my 8 if no one options are left.

Texas to North Carolina

We went from Texas to North Carolina in my 8 when we were running from Hurricane Rita. The only reason we went that far is because we have family up there. I forget exactly how many miles it was, but I do remember many, many stops at the gas station.

Good luck on your trip and be safe!

Road Trip

I drove from Corpus Christi, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia and back at Christmas. About 1,150 miles each way. Stopped only for gas, bathroom, and to top off the oil. (That wankel really guzzles the oil when you run it for 16 hours straight at 80ph! When I lived in Halifax I drove a buddies '84 RX-7 to montreal without stopping but that was a little more uncomfortable than the 8!

Animagix: This is a fun car for long road trips, especially if there's open road and any twisties...

No other options?

You'll probably use up A LOT of gas on a road trip of 1,000 miles +. Maybe a fuel efficient rental car would be easier on the wallet??

El Paso to Pittsburgh and back, about 2k miles each way. Stopped for gas, food, and the occasional cat-nap. Biggest thing I learned from the trip: bring oil!

First winter I had car - did 1800 miles from Terre Haute IN to Dartmouth Nova Scotia CANADA - about 1700 miles each way. Burnt only 1 quart each way. Got about 22 miles per gallon.

What happened to our long-distance purchase folks? Flying Texas to Boston, then driving back? Anyone got that story?

I drove ~350 miles home with my newly purchased RXS-8. Not really long distance, but it was a nice getting-to-know-you cruise. First, the Baltimore freeways showing off the car in going-home traffic (lots of looks). Then, the dark open roads of 15N through PA. Yeah, even without the knee-pad it was a good drive.

It was different than my previous road-trips because I insisted on a complete food and drink ban. No lemon drops, no soda to sip (no crumbs, no puddles) - just driving with both hands. It would be harder to maintain a food/drink ban on a 2,000+ mile round trip though.
I suggest a really really really large rain pancho like this one

I drove 800 miles day 1 and 2 from columbus, OH to Boston, MA, never going more than 75 mph. God that was hard... Great gas mileage though

I wouldn't worry about comfort - the ride in the 8 is steady and compliant enough and the seats are comfortable enough; it's not going to wear you out unless you have unusually bumpy freeways.

Furthest I've gone in the 8 is about 8 hours at a stretch. In the Miata I drove from Fullerton, CA to Cleveland OH in under 39 hours, solo. I did spend about 90 minutes laying on a rest-stop picnic table somewheres in Texas...

I've driven the 800-ish mile trip to/from my parent's house now four times (twice each way). Compared to my other cars ('83 RX7, '95 S-coupe) and the work cars (various 4WD/SUV type vehicles) it's extremely comfortable. I stopped to eat outside the car, and maybe had a few Red Bulls inside it... But was all fun

I did a trip to Montreal the day after I picked up the car. Where are you driving from? The RX-8 is a great hyw car. The seats are comfortable on a long trip, the cruise control works well, the stereo sounds great. What more could you want?
Okay, maybe a bigger tank...

Okay, my trip was not that long but it was to Montreal

We drove from Calgary, Alberta to Tampa Fl. a month after purchasing the RX8. A grand total of over 10,000 km. An amazing trip taking 4 days each way! We stayed in Fl. for about a month.

I'm going to leave from new york city. This'll be m y second time going to montreal but never done it with the rx8.
me and a group of friends drove from cali to new york once, that took two weeks to accomplish. Stopped by all of the great hotspots such as the grand canyons, a few strip clubs, new orleans, more strip clubs, gambling, and did i mention strip clubs?
How many miles can I expect to get out of a full tank of gas? 300?

Depends on a bunch of factors, but if you are mainly on Interstate-type roads, driving at ~75 mph, your low-fuel warning light should come on at about 260-300 miles. That leaves you about 40 miles max of fuel to find a gas station.

Bon voyage!

I just did suburban Maryland to Phoenix, AZ over X-Mas.
Drove it straight through. 2575 miles in 34 hours. My wife did the stretch between Oklahoma City and Albuquerque. 9 tanks of gas & 1/2 quart of oil.

I have yet to take a trip in my RX8 but the longest I went was from Orlando, FL to deep into Kentucky. I drove the whole way, 15 hours if I remember right.

WHEN? WHAT TIRES?

Montreal gets real winters, with lots of snow. RX-8s' stock summer tires are useless and dangerous in snow. If you don't have winter tires - do NOT take the RX-8 to Montreal in winter.

Re road trips - 2 weeks after picking up my RX-8 in July 2003, I did a road trip from Calgary to Monterey, CA, to the Historic Races. Something like 4000 miles round trip. It's a great road trip car, very comfortable, averaged about 20 mpg US.

We went from Laramie, WY to San Antonio, TX for an engineering conference last year; 18 hours straight through stopping only to gas up, check the oil, (carried five, needed 1), and change drivers. I can say without hesitation that the 8 is very comfortable on long trips like this. My wife and I went to St. Louis in May of 04, again, speding about 16 hours total on the road, but we stopped over in Lincoln, NE. If you have to take a long trip, driving the 8 doesn't suck.

If the roads are clear you could have a great time. Vermont 100 is supposed to be a very enjoyable road (on C&D best roads list a few times). A bit out of the way, but no doubt worth it. Something like NY 22 could also be a lot of fun.

If the roads are clear.

I87 not nearly as fun.

I'd expect low 20s on the highway, mid teens if you find a fun road through the mountains. Shame it's not fall.

Oh, yeah, the question. In one day I went from Virginia Beach, VA, to Marietta, OH, with a dip through WV to catch what I'd read were the best roads. I think I was in the car for 16 hours. The next day I drove to Detroit, again taking the scenic route through SE OH. Great travelling car, impossible to fault for challenging but unfamiliar roads. Except for the gas mileage, which was 15 in the mountains.

I spent more on gas than a plane ticket would have cost me. And it was worth every penny.

road trip

I just flew to Boston and drove my 8 back to Amarillo, Tx., a little under 2000 miles but I broke the trip up into 3 days, Boston to Westfield, NY, NY to Paducah, KY then into Amarillo. BTW I got about 20 mpg (6 sp) cruising 70 to 80 mph most of the way with occasional outbursts to 100+ (made it a rule to hit at least 100 in every state I drove through). Very smooth ride but very smelly, lots of hot plastic smells.

Smells? Brand new? Some funky detailing fluids applied by the dealer? I don't think these are stock.

This car doesn't belong on the Interstate. Find a two-lane with some curves in it.

Gas is decent not the best but MPG on the road is pretty good i get usually around 260 Miles on my whole gas of tank.. Not that good fro other gas efficient vehicles but it was decent.
